The Best RPGs on Game Pass

Game Netflix, as Game Pass is often called, offers more and more titles from different genres. However, RPG fans have the biggest reasons to be happy. The offer doesn't lack both classics and new releases. And even completely offbeat indies.

Undertale

ON THIS PAGE:

  1. Release year: 2015
  2. Producer: Toby Fox

Toby Fox had to use all his skills to create Undertale. He was responsible for the visuals, music, plot, lyrics, and even combat mechanics. Artist Temmie Chang assisted him in the process of building the graphics. They both proved that it is possible to produce a title capable of conquering the market with almost no funds, not even created in Unity, Source or Unreal, but in the simple GameMaker Studio.

In a world where two, once peaceful races – humans and monsters – have fought a bloody battle, and the former managed to drive the latter underground, it's difficult to complain of boredom. One of the potential opponents is experiencing an existential crisis, and the protagonist falls into a bizarre hole, and the authors surprise us with an easter egg neatly woven into the plot...

Undertale's greatest strength is its deliberate denial of RPG patterns. But not from the beginning. After a few minutes of fun, it may seem that this is just a garden-variety production. However, every time we feel confident in it, believing that we have just managed to figure out the intentions of the creators, the game surprises with another creative trick. And that goes on until the very, equally unusual, end... Unless you are tempted by the opportunity to complete this title again, for example with a more peaceful approach (as we are not forced to fight at all). And I think you will be tempted.

Undungeon is a game that's a bit bigger than Undertale, at least in terms of required disk space. However, it's also an indie RPG. There's no lack of a creative approach to mechanics, and the plot is also trying to break out of the schemes. Dynamic, fast clashes allow you to focus on the atmosphere of a world where several dimensions have merged into one, making the use of essence (which replaces traditional experience points) a serious endeavor. Right – we can also transplant our organs in this game. Doesn't it sound cute?

Wasteland 3

  1. Release year: 2020
  2. Developer: inXile Entertainment

If you liked the old Fallouts more than the new ones, developed by Bethesda, Wasteland 3 should really appeal to you. It may lack graphic flair, and some of the textures look oldish, but in terms of plot, it is one of the best post-apocalyptic RPGs of recent years. Beefy dialog, original companions and a lot of equipment – you will find it all in Colorado of the future.

After part two, set in a sandy environment characteristic of the genre, we got something completely different. The new environments, covered in snow and ice, and often rather gloomy, propose an interesting alternative. Besides, inXile ignores the schemes not only in this matter. Wasteland 3 is often a complete satire, not afraid to jab at the industry giants.

The most important skill to learn before playing Wasteland 3 is getting used to long loading times. As with other games from this studio, they can go on forever. However, if you are able to get through it, you will receive a piece of an incredibly atmospheric RPG with an interesting story, a whole host of interesting companions and a tactical combat system that will not let you get bored (or feel too confident!) throughout the entire experience.

The Game Pass offer also includes the remastered Wasteland (from 1988) and Wasteland 2. The latter production is particularly noteworthy. The graphics have aged decently here, the main storyline surprises with smart plot twists several times, and the content itself is enough for several dozen hours of high-quality entertainment.
