It's been a long time since a game offered such nice views.
  1. Genre: Open-world Dark Souls
  2. Play it if: locations in other soulslike games were too claustrophobic for you
  3. Don't play if: you don't have the patience for difficult games
  4. Similar games: Dark Souls, NiOh

FromSoftware, on the occasion of Elden Ring, went all out and for the first time introduced an open world in their own soulslike genre. And the world is indeed big. The size, the flora, the architecture, and the vibe of individual regions all make a lasting impression. In such beautiful locations, dying is a pleasure. Even dozens, hundreds of times.

Introducing a truly open world without any markers (these only appeared in one of the updates) on the map was a bold and, as reviews and player opinions show, successful decision. Is it even possible to find your way here? You have to try. The authors have laid out a default path, populating individual regions with opponents of various levels of challenge. It's more difficult if you don't know about it and stubbornly want to defeat the monster prepared for a later stage of the game. It isn't impossible, though, which is confirmed by numerous clips on YT. However, even the most hardcore players can struggle with even more unequal fights for several hours.

The combat system is basically the same as in the Dark Souls series. In the end, there's no need to mend what's not broken. However, this wasn't done without adding a few new features. The dance of death has gained unprecedented dynamics and was expanded with jumping attacks, satisfying finishing blows, and special attacks that change depending on the type of weapon held. There's also the ability to jump or ride a mount.

Not much has changed in terms of telling history. We discover the plot at our own pace, exploring the world, looking for collectibles, and occasionally talking to someone. From such fragmentary elements we can get a fuller picture of the history of this monumental realm.
