Order of Battle: World War II is a classic turn-based strategy set during WWII, and a debut game by a studio from Luxemburg, called The Aristocrats. The game was initially supposed to be released as a standalone title called Order of Battle: Pacific, but around a year into the production it was decided that it should become a free-to-play game – on the same occasion, the title has been changed. The title combines old-school mechanics, based on games such as Panzer General, with modern 3D graphics. The gameplay is conducted in a turn-based system on typical hexagons. The game, along with its expansions, provides hundreds of units with unique specialties, realistic yet approachable support system and a plethora of legendary commanders providing different bonuses for their armies. In the base version of the game, there is one training camp, serving as a tutorial, and one scenario from each available DLC.

A turn-based strategy game developed by Western Civilization Software. As the title suggests, the game focuses on the American Civil War, during which brothers often had to turn against each other when the Confederate States declared war upon the northern states, devastating the United States of America. The action of this game is set at the initial stages of the American Civil War, allowing players to participate in the events such as the First Battle of Bull Run, the Battle of Wilson's Creek (1861), the Battle of Mill Springs and the Battle of Williamsburg (1862). Apart from the large campaigns, the game delivers a number of smaller scenarios, including the hypothetical ones presenting an alternative course of events. Battles take place on huge maps covering the area of 50 square miles, divided into 75-yard hexagons. A single turn corresponds to 24 hours in real time. Brother against Brother: The Drawing of the Sword builds on realism – regiments have their unique skills that made them famous during the Civil War. Apart from the units’ stats and player’s tactical decisions, the battle is affected by the amount of supplies, changing weather conditions, and the smoke suspended over the battlefield.

The campaign begins with the invasion of Poland, during which we receive command over Schleswig-Holstein and a number of smaller units which were sent to support the land forces in Northern Poland. The subsequent scenarios take us to other parts of Baltic Sea, North Sea, as well as Atlantic Ocean, pitting us against Royal Navy and its allies. The hypothetical scenarios offer the ability to rescue Bismarck from the British forces, or lead German navy reinforced by Plan Z. When it comes to units, we are left with fifty new tokens including a hydroplane tender. The combat system was updated with new naval-oriented mechanics – an evasion bonus for mobile vessels, reduced detection of submarine units, or two weapon systems for battleships.

U.S. Marines gives the player a chance of leading the titular formation in an offensive against a group of tropical islands on Pacific, including Solomon Islands and Guadalcanal. Moreover, the developers introduced support fire for heavy infantry units. Additionally, the game introduces a “skirmish” mode which creates a fictional campaign taking place on randomly generated maps. The gameplay in Pike and Shot: Campaigns 1494-1698 does not differ much from its predecessor. Players control a chosen nation, engaging in tactical battles requiring a number of strategic decisions which can influence the course of the whole campaign. Victories, as well as defeats contribute to mental state and battle readiness of our soldiers. Aside from a single player mode, the developers introduced a multiplayer module employing PBEM++ system. The game employs high-quality visuals, inspired by battle scenes from that era.

There are eighteen different campaigns available. A part of the game’s scenarios will take the players less than sixty minutes to finish, but some will require many hours of attention. The realism and detailed recreation of the events featured in the game are among its biggest assets. Thanks to this, we can now build cities or even entire states on the water and use the natural resources hidden in the underwater depths, although the latter is connected to a myriad of completely new dangers. Another notable change is the dynamic diplomacy model that also accounts for the actions taken by the player up to that point. The second installment takes you to the Eastern Front of the World War II. The year is 1941, after the Nazi Germany launched the famous Operation Barbarossa, aimed at their former ally – the USSR. Battle Academy 2 offers four campaigns for a total of 30 missions. Apart from that, you can also play through individual scenarios or fight in the skirmish mode. In order to make the gameplay more diverse, maps are generated randomly. At its core the gameplay looks a bit like in the Panzer General series. The developers meticulously recreated over 130 authentic units and combat vehicles from the World War II period. Battle Academy 2 also introduces minor changes to mechanics, such as smoke, short sprinting for infantry units, aerial support, partial damage and tactical use of trenches.
