The Little Nightmares series was created in cooperation between Bandai Namco Entertainment and Tarsier Studios. After the release of its first two installments, the paths of the team behind it and its publisher diverged, and in order to continue the series, the Japanese company was forced to find a new partner .

Ultimately, Supermassive Games was picked for the project - a British studio specializing in horror games, whose portfolio includes Until Dawn and The Dark Pictures Anthology . This is how Little Nightmares III described here was born.

Gameplay

In Little Nightmares III we watch the action from the side. As was the case in the two previous parts of the series, we are dealing with a horror platformer with adventure elements .

Cooperation between protagonists

The main characters of this game are two children – Low and Alone – who are trapped in a land known as Nowhere. The protagonists are making their way through this nasty place, and since each of them has a different tool, they must cooperate with each other.

Little Nightmares Game Series

Little Nightmares is a series of arcade platform games maintained in the horror convention and reminiscent of titles like the iconic Limbo. The first installment hit the market in 2017, while the release of the second was held in February 2021. Responsible for the production of both parts is an independent Swedish company Tarsier Studios, already known for its work on the series of platformers Little Big Planet. The games, meanwhile, were published by Bandai Namco Entertainment, a Japanese company formed in 2014 by the merger of Bandai and Namco.

Little Nightmares 3 review: Familiar fears, fewer surprises

Little Nightmares III is a darkly beautiful follow-up that captures the series’ eerie charm but plays it too safe, offering an experience that feels more familiar than frightening.

WellPlayed: 7 / 10 by Kieron Verbrugge

An enjoyable enough threequel that delivers on the promise of a co-operative Little Nightmares without straying from the established formula, for better and for worse.

Rectify Gaming: 7 / 10 by Ali Amir

Little Nightmares 3 keeps the creepy “silent horror” vibe, environmental storytelling, puzzle-platform elements, and grotesque monster design. Having two characters with different tools adds more puzzle/traversal variety. The inclusion of online co-op is something many fans have been asking for. The visual fidelity and frame performance require more compromises compared to PS5. This might not deliver as cleanly if you prefer local co-op or play only on low-end platforms. For players who love atmospheric, slow-burn horror, puzzles, and exploration and don’t mind some slower pacing, Little Nightmares 3 is for you.

Daily Mirror: 4 / 5

The addition of co-op, both local and online, offers a new twist on the concept without totally upsetting the balance, and I found playing with an AI buddy to be just as satisfying. Regardless, in many ways, Little Nightmares 3 proves that small scares can be just as enjoyable with a friend.

The main pros of the game

  • Visuals and Atmosphere: The graphics are praised for being beautiful and maintaining the dark, eerie aesthetic that the series is known for.
  • Interesting Characters: The characters, Low and Alone, are well-designed and their friendship is engaging, though some players felt it wasn't developed enough.
  • Cooperative Gameplay: The game introduces a co-op feature, which can enhance the experience when played with a friend.
  • Chase Sequences: Some players found the chase sequences thrilling and enjoyable, contributing to the game's tension.

The main cons of the game

  • Incomplete Story: Many users felt that the game's story was weak and incomplete, lacking depth and connection to the previous titles. Important lore elements are often tied to external media, such as podcasts, which can leave players confused.
  • Short Length: The game is criticized for being too short (around 3-6 hours), especially given its price point of $40. Players felt it didn't provide enough content for the cost.
  • Repetitive Gameplay: Many reviews mention that the gameplay feels repetitive, with too much focus on simple puzzles and running through empty rooms without much interaction.
  • Lack of Challenge: The puzzles and enemy encounters are described as easy and unchallenging, which detracted from the overall experience.
  • Technical Issues: Several players reported bugs and glitches that affected gameplay, including AI issues and problems with character controls.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Local Co-op: The absence of local co-op play was a significant disappointment for many players who expected to play together on the same console.
  • More Engaging Puzzles and Mechanics: Users expressed a desire for more complex puzzles and gameplay mechanics that would enhance the challenge and engagement.
  • Depth in Storytelling: Players wanted a more cohesive narrative that ties back to the previous games without relying on external lore, as well as more impactful moments that resonate emotionally, similar to what was seen in the first two games.

Summary

  • Overall, while Little Nightmares III has its strengths, particularly in visuals and character design, it falls short in storytelling and gameplay compared to its predecessors, leading to mixed reviews from players.
