Resident Evil Requiem is the ninth main installment of the best-selling survival horror series, started in 1996 by the game Resident Evil. It was developed and published by Capcom.

Gameplay in the style of a psychological horror

The game offers a choice of perspective: first-person (FPP) or third-person (TPP). It can be freely switched during gameplay, which is quite significant, as individual scenes look slightly different, depending on the camera we choose.

Main protagonist and her impact on the gameplay

Unlike most previous installments of the series, which were hardcore survival horrors with a large dose of combat scenes, in Resident Evil Requiem the developers decided to turn towards psychological horror. It is worth noting that the fast-paced action and other elements for which the series is famous for are still here. Nonetheless, unlike Claire Redfield and other protagonists we've had the chance to play as before, Grace Ashcroft does not have much combat experience, which makes her move noticeably slower, and fighting is not her strongest suit.

Resident Evil Game Series

Resident Evil is a series of Japanese survival horrors published by Capcom. Shinji Mikami and Tokuro Fujiwara are mainly responsible for its creation. The series started on March 22, 1996, with the release of Resident Evil (also known as Biohazard) on the PlayStation console. It was during its marketing campaign that the term survival horror was coined. The prototype of the series is the game Sweet Home released in 1989, based on the film of the same name. Fujiwara himself was responsible for it, and many elements, such as QTE sequences or inventory management, were transferred to the Biohazard series. Since then, it has grown steadily, gaining more game installments, as well as movie, animation, comic book and novel adaptations.

Netto’s Game Room: 5 / 5 by Benjamin Bell

Resident Evil Requiem is a masterclass in survival horror. It expertly blends the classic style with more action-oriented outings, features outstanding stage design, and contains some of the most interesting zombies ever seen in a video game. Capcom has proven itself yet again; one can’t help but feel a bit sad when the credits roll—not because of the story, but because you know you’ll never get to experience this game for the first time again. It is truly something special.

PlayStation Universe: 9.5 / 10 by Michael Harradence

Resident Evil Requiem is a confident, gorgeous-looking and genuinely scary romp that expertly balances its horror and action elements into one compelling, hair-raising package. Grace is one of the best new characters the series has introduced to date, and a perfect complement to veteran zombie slayer Leon. As the series celebrates its 30th anniversary, Resident Evil Requiem sees the franchise at its strongest in years.

The main cons of the game

  • Pacing Issues: Some players felt the pacing was uneven, particularly in the second half of the game where Leon's action sequences could feel repetitive compared to Grace's more intense horror segments.

  • Underwhelming Boss Fights: Boss encounters were criticized for being less memorable and lacking variety, especially compared to earlier titles in the franchise.
  • Fan Service Overload: While many appreciated the nostalgia, some felt that the reliance on fan service could be excessive and detracted from the new narrative.

  • More Complex Puzzles: Many users wished for puzzles that required deeper thinking and problem-solving, similar to those found in earlier Resident Evil games.
  • Expanded Character Development: Some players hoped for more depth in character arcs and motivations, particularly for supporting characters.
