Routine is an action-adventure game from the survival-horror genre, which in some aspects resembles such productions as Dead Space or installments of the Amnesia series. The title is the debut project of the English indie studio – Lunar Software, which consists of three members. Mick Gordon, the co-creator of the sound effects and music for games such as Crysis 3, Dead Space 3 and Need for Speed, has also been involved in the development of Routine.

The storyline revolves around the mysterious disappearance of the crew members of the Lunar Research Station. To solve the puzzle we travel through the claustrophobic, dark corridors and rooms of the moon base, uncovering its secrets. The developers have focused mainly on the survival and horror aspects, and have limited the UI and equipment elements to the absolute minimum; in other words, we will not see any first-aid kits in Routine and the death of our character is permanent. The main tool we can use is the CAT – Cosmonaut Assistance Tool, which is a repair device with the appearance of a pistol. The title allows us to upgrade it by using the floppy disks found in the base, and in some cases lets us use it as a weapon.

User Reviews Summary generated by AI

The main pros of the game

  • Atmosphere and Aesthetics: The game excels in creating a haunting and immersive atmosphere, with a strong retro-futuristic aesthetic reminiscent of 80s sci-fi. The visuals and audio design are frequently praised, with many users noting the excellent sound design that enhances the horror experience.
  • Immersion: Players appreciate the minimal UI and the diegetic nature of the gameplay, which encourages exploration and critical thinking. The lack of hand-holding and the need to interact with the environment make for a more engaging experience.
  • Unique Tool Mechanics: The C.A.T. tool is highlighted as a creative and versatile gameplay mechanic that adds depth to puzzle-solving and interactions within the game.
  • Environmental Storytelling: The game employs environmental storytelling effectively, allowing players to piece together the narrative through exploration and discovery.

The main cons of the game

  • Short Length: Many players find the game to be too short, with playtimes averaging around 5 to 7 hours. This brevity leads to concerns about replayability and overall value for the price.
  • Inconsistent Gameplay: While the atmosphere and immersion are strong, some players feel the gameplay mechanics can be shallow or underutilized. There are complaints about certain puzzles feeling disconnected or overly simplistic.
  • Predictable Story: The narrative has been described as cliché and lacking depth, with some players feeling that the story doesn't deliver a satisfying payoff. The ending has received particular criticism for being abrupt and vague.
  • Enemy AI and Encounter Design: Some users express disappointment with the enemy AI, stating that it can be easily exploited and doesn't pose a significant threat, which diminishes the horror aspect.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Map and Navigation Aids: Players noted the absence of a map, which can lead to confusion and aimless wandering, particularly in the later chapters.
  • More Complex Puzzles: Some players desired more intricate puzzles and mechanics that would require deeper engagement with the game's systems throughout the entire experience rather than just in isolated segments.
  • Expanded Storytelling: There are calls for a more cohesive and engaging narrative that builds upon the initial setup and provides clearer resolutions to the story's mysteries.
  • Difficulty Options: A demand for more balanced difficulty settings or options to make encounters more challenging has been expressed, as some players found the game too easy.

Summary

  • Overall, ROUTINE presents a compelling atmosphere and unique gameplay mechanics but is hindered by its brevity, predictable story, and some gameplay inconsistencies. Players who appreciate immersive horror experiences may find it worthwhile, while others may feel it falls short of its potential.
