Like in the original game, in Atelier Shallie Plus: Alchemists of the Dusk Sea you play as one of the two protagonists, Shallistera Argo or Shallote Elminus, whose task is to discover the secrets of a dying world. The gameplay focuses on exploring the surroundings, gathering resources for analysis, and fighting encountered enemies. The combat is turn-based, and to win you have to appropriately use your equipment, special attacks and abilities. Another important aspect of the game is completing various quests and side missions, as well as achieving “life goals” of the characters, which enhances their abilities and stats. The game also features a crafting system, allowing you to create new items and upgrade those you already have.

Plot-wise Atelier Sophie opens a completely new chapter in the history of the series and is unaffiliated with any of the previous installments. This time we become 16 year old Sophie – a novice alchemist who inherited two things after her late grandmother: a sizable workshop and a mysterious, talking book. One day, the book takes the form of a woman named Plachta and asks our heroine for help in recovering lost memories. Thus begins Sophie's adventure, during which she will explore numerous colorful locations, collect ingredients for alchemical recipes and fight with various creatures. One of the main novelties in the series is a day and night cycle, which significantly influences the type of encountered enemies and NPCs.
