2021 Brought Record Pledges for Star Citizen

The year 2021 turned out to be a record year for Star Citizen. The game, developed by Cloud Imperium Games for many years, has collected the most money from players in its entire history, and we still have almost the whole December to go. Yesterday, the developers updated the game's roadmap.

Video game developers usually take several years before they release a finished game. Star Citizen, the space sim developed by Chris Roberts and the team at Cloud Imperium Games, has been in alpha (a sort of early access) for over seven years. Even earlier, namely in 2012, a crowdfunding campaign was launched, in which players contribute their money to the development of the game. The long development cycle apparently does not discourage the fans, because in 2021 a record of pledges was made - according to the game's official financing history, since January, more than 78 million USD have been transferred to the developers' account. Data for individual years is shown in the chart below.

This is "only" about a million more than in the whole of 2020, but let's remember that December has just begun. So it is possible that the amount of 80 million USD will be exceeded. To date, Cloud Imperium Games has collected a total of over 418,558,737 dollars from 3,413,544 people (current data can be checked here). This sum is still growing, despite no release date having been announced.

This does not mean, however, that the developers are idle. Work on the game continues, the best proof of which is the recently updated roadmap for Star Citizen. You can read the details here.
