AMD Radeon RX 6000 With TBP Comparable to RTX 3000

Youtuber Igor Wallosek calculated that the reference models of Radeon RX 6900 XT and Radeon RX 6900 GPUs will require 320 W and 290 W respectively. In case of custom designs the power consumption may be even higher.

IN A NUTSHELL:

  1. Youtuber Igor Wallosek calculated that the total board power (TBP) of Radeon RX 6900 XT is 320 W;
  2. Custom models may consume up to 355 Watts;
  3. The weaker Radeon RX 6900 will need about 290 Watts;
  4. Both cards are reported to have 16 GB VRAM.

Known youtuber Igor Wallosek reports that the Radeon RX 6000 GPUs have a big appetite for power. In his analysis, the expert points out that in the case of AMD card revealed in recent leaks, the TGP cannot be compared with the TGP used by Nvidia. The former takes into account only the power drawn by GPU and VRAM, while the latter takes into account the entire GPU (with cooling and all the other elements needed for operation). In case of AMD the equivalent of Nvidia's TGP is TBP (total board power).

Igor used the calculation method previously used by GeForce RTX 3090 (in that case he managed to calculate the power consumption with almost ideal accuracy - he was wrong by only two watts) to determine the probable real power requirement of the Radeon RX 6000. Everything indicates that the TBP ratio of AMD's most powerful GPU - the Radeon RX 6900 XT (Navi 21 XT) - will be 320 watts. This means that the card will require about as much power as the GeForce RTX 3080, its direct competitor.

As with Nvidia cards, custom designs may have an even higher power requirement of up to 355 watts.

On the other hand, Navi 21 XL, the weaker Radeon RX 6900 (without XT suffix) will most likely need around 290 W.

Reports also suggest that both of these chips will have 16 gigabytes of VRAM. In the case of the stronger Radeon, it is expected to have a speed of 16 Gbps, which translates into 512 GB/sec bandwidth. The weaker card will be equipped with slower memory (14 Gbps), guaranteeing 448 GB/sec bandwidth.
