Boxed Edition of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Apparently Requires Download [UPDATE]

The physical release of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor will apparently require downloading additional files necessary to install the title. Do boxed versions of games still make sense these days?

Update#1: According to information provided by industry analyst MauroNL, the medium included in the physical release of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor for Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 contains about 62 GB of data. This means that owners of these platforms will have to download an additional 80-90 GB from the web.

Importantly, the game will not require maintaining a constant internet connection during gameplay.

Information on Star Wars Jedi: Survivor being a particularly "heavy" game, is no longer a secret. The matter made some waves in recent days, when it was reported about the massive weight of the title on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

Some surprise

As it turns out, Survivor on the aforementioned consoles will "ask" us to download additional data from the network. The new information surfaced on Reddit, where one user posted a photo of cardboard boxes filled with copies of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.

The photo was taken by an employee of one of New Zealand's game stores (Mighty Ape). Of particular interest is the following incription on the cover: "download required".

We contacted the Monday agency about the matter. We learned that the boxed version of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor on PC includes only an installation code, while copies for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S will offer a disc.

Combined with earlier reports, one can be almost certain that the requirement to download additional data on consoles will indeed exist..

At the time of writing this news, we do not know how much data and what kind of data will have to be downloaded from the Internet. It is possible that it is about assets in 4K resolution.

Justified disappointment

While for PC gamers, downloading additional files, as well as entire games, is not surprising, for users of at least the PlayStation 5, this information may come as quite a surprise or even a disappointment..

As we know, Sony at one time boasted its proprietary Kraken file compression software (via Tom's Hardware), which can reduce the weight of the game by up to 60%. This system was used in, among others, Forspoken, where it managed to "slim down" title to 87 GB (on PC it takes up 150 GB).

Games on discs - does it still make sense?

As expected, in the comments under the post a discussion heated up about the point of buying physical editions of games. It's hardly surprising - until now, an important advantage of boxed copies on consoles (in addition to the collector's value) was the ability to fire up the game "directly from the disc" (after installing from the media part of the data or the whole game on the console's disk).

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor will debut on PC, PS5 and XSX/S on April 28, this year.
