The first part of the Call of Duty series will celebrate its 20th birthday soon. The famous game debuted on October 29, 2003 and began a long history of success for the brand.
It will soon be two decade since the release of the first installment of Call of Duty, created by Infinity Ward. The game, which was supposed to be Activision's answer to the success of Medal of Honor - EA's then popular Electronic Arts - has grown into a giant series, becoming synonymous with action games for many. The developers thank their community for the years spent with the franchise and encourage you to read an extended summary of the series that they prepared for the occasion. Infinity Ward, on the other hand, brought to the table an impressive cake.
During these 20 years of the series' existence, a total of more than 20 games for a variety of platforms have been released. They have sold more than 400 million copies (data as of the end of 2022). In addition to this, you must also take into account free-to-play installments, such as Call of Duty Mobile, which has about half a billion downloads, or Call of Duty: Warzone (the number of players has already topped 100 million in 2020).
So it's no surprise that Activision is returning to smartphones and as early as spring 2024 fans will get Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile. To celebrate the anniversary of the series, the developers are even boasting, that 45 million players have already pre-registered to test the game.
Fans, however, do not have to wait so long for a new CoD experience. Already on November 10 Sony and Microsoft's another "big" game in the series will debut on PC and consoles, namely Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III.
