Extraction shooters are a natural extension of classical FPS titles, introducing variety to every run. No one should be surprised that with the passage of time, game genres mix with each other, creating completely fresh subgenres in the process. What was initially unthinkable like connecting FPS and RPG resulted in ever popular and loved by many Borderlands series. Now, extraction shooters have been mixed with soulslikes by the creators of the latter in Elden Ring Nightreign. What might have been a dream come true for many, offering a cooperation-focused gameplay, was met with one of the worst reviews among FromSoftware games. Yet it’s not a bad title by any stretch of imagination, as still hundreds of thousands of fans enjoy it simultaneously (via SteamDB). Despite the change of pace that Nightreign introduced, the soul (pun intended) of FromSoftware productions is intact, as there are still items to be found, shrouded by mystery, spurning fans to craft theories about their use. One of such objects is Cord End. Does it have any meaning or is it just a joke added by the creators? Let’s try to shed a bit more light on this stray fragment of rope.

What is the use of Cord End in Elden Ring Nightreign

Cord End can be usually found in one of Limveld’s safer locations churches. Its cryptic description “Gain entry somewhere” does not help much, as it doesn’t specify anything more than that. There are numerous discussions on Reddit where fans try to figure out the answer, yet so far none has been found. There are a lot of theories being proposed as to what this piece of rope, resembling umbilical cord from Bloodborne, can be used for, however nothing obvious and certain has been found as of yet.

There are a couple of popular theories that seem probable:

  1. Gaining entry to one of the rises scattered around the map without breaking their seals.
  2. Opening specific doors during shifting earth events.
  3. Getting past doors in Roundtable Hold after defeating the final Night Lord.

Whatever the answer is, it is still shrouded in mystery. This is something that keeps the community engaged and gives them a topic to discuss. It’s not the first time the creators have added such vague items to their games. An example can be Pendant from the original Dark Souls, where it most probably served as a prank from the production’s director, Hidetaka Miyazaki. We have to keep in mind that Elden Ring Nightreign is directed by a different person – Junya Ishizaki. Due to that, the narration, while familiar, might be different to what we are used to.

Since this production is not a classical souls entry, you might want to learn how to unlock new playable characters like Duchess and Revenant. Also, let’s not forget about a bit of good ol’ souls fashion, as it is possible to use different skins, or garbs, for your Nightfarers. They will allow you to defeat difficult opponents in style.

We are used to challenging bosses in the souls’ series, though Elden Ring Nightreign’s biggest obstacle might be finding the third person to fare through Limveld. FromSoftware apologized for this overlook and promised to improve a solo mode, yet the fans were faster with creating a mod allowing for single and duo play.
