Borderlands Video Game Series

In addition to the main installments, over the years the brand has lived to see both remasters and spin-offs. In 2012, there was a mobile Borderlands Legends. In 2014, an MMORPG set in this universe was announced, but eventually this project was canceled. Nevertheless, in the same year an episodic adventure game from Telltale Games studio hit store shelves, titled Tales from the Borderlands: A Telltale Games Series. The year 2015 brought the release of the compilation Borderlands: The Handsome Collection, a remastering package of the games Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel!. enriched with all the add-ons. In 2018, the game hit store shelves Borderlands 2 VR, which is a special version of the second part of the series, prepared with virtual reality sets in mind, while in 2019 debuted a remaster of the first Borderlands, under the title Borderlands: Game of the Year Edition. The year 2022 was marked for the described brand by yet another spin-off, entitled Tiny Tina's Wonderlands, as well as a second narrative adventure set in this distinctive universe, i.e. New Tales from the Borderlands. In 2023, meanwhile, a package of six productions from under this banner was released, baptized as Borderlands Collection: Pandora's Box.

In terms of storyline, the games in the series Borderlands are linked by selected plots and characters, but each tells a separate story. The common denominator is primarily the theme of mythical crypts containing countless treasures and the heroes who follow them - the so-called vault hunters.

Gameplay in the main games under the banner of Borderlands combines elements of a first-person shooter (FPS) and RPG (hence the term "role-playing shooter" promoted by the developers). Players take on the roles of characters diverse in terms of skills, preferred weaponry, character and motivation. The open structure of the locations allows a great deal of freedom of action, and the tasks associated with the threads of the main campaign are accompanied by a large number of missions and side activities.

A specific hallmark of the series is an unimaginably wide range of various weapons. Gearbox Software reports that in the first installment of the series there are more than 17 million different variations falling under one of the nine weapon types available in the game, while in subsequent installments there are even more. Another element for which the series is known is the co-op mode, which allows up to four players to play together. One should also not forget the specific humor and dozens of easter eggs. Series Borderlands is also distinguished by unconventional visuals, made using cel-shading technology. The inspiration for the developers from Gearbox Software came from the short animation Codehunters by Ben Hibon.

The brand also lived to see its own comic book series (published by IDW Publishing), as well as two novels by John Shirley - Borderlands. Borderlands: The Fallen i Borderlands: Unconquered. Plans for a film adaptation were also announced in 2015, with Lionsgate Entertainment producing.
