E3 2022 Not in Person; Show's Future Uncertain

Also this year we won't see E3 in person. This time, however, even the online event is not 100% certain to be held.

IN A NUTSHELL:
  • This year, the E3 will once again not be held in person;
  • However, this does not mean that we are certain to get an online event;
  • For now, the organizers are unable to determine the future of the show.

We finally learned something more about this year's E3. New information was brought to us by a statement shared by the organizer of the event, the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), with IGN. It reads that this year we will not see the stationary edition of the fair.

"Due to the ongoing health risks surrounding COVID-19 and its potential impact on the safety of exhibitors and attendees, E3 will not be held in person in 2022. We remain incredibly excited about the future of E3 and look forward to announcing more details soon.”

These words would suggest that the ESA is once again preparing to organize an online version of the event. It turns out, however, that this is not so sure. In response to further questions from IGN, the organization said that it can not confirm that we will see such a scenario this year. It's possible, then, that 2022 will lack an E3 altogether.

This would mean further problems for the trade show, which has been facing various troubles for several years in a row. After all, the E3 is surrounded by numerous controversies. In 2019, ESA was responsible for leaking the data of more than 2,000 people who attended the event. A year later, plans made rounds on the web, according to which the fair was to turn into a festival for YouTubers and influencers. The last edition of E3, which took place online, was overshadowed by technical issues of ESA's official app created for the event. What's more many publishers resigned from participating.

Many people may therefore wonder if the event is still needed at all. All trailers presented at the fair are immediately published on websites such as YouTube. In this form they are also free of the often tiresome host conversations, which are not interesting to many viewers.

For now, however, it's hard to say what the future of the E3 will look like. It is possible that the enigmatic statement means that even the organizers themselves do not have this knowledge yet. We can only wait for further announcements.
