E3 2023 Canceled [UPDATE#4]

Dark clouds have gathered over this year's E3 trade show. Following the withdrawal of several major players, the E3 2023 got canceled.

Update #4: Kyle Marsden-Kish, the company's vice president of gaming ReedPop (organizer of E3), confirmed the information presented by IGN. The official statement reads:

This was a difficult decision because of all the effort we and our partners put toward making this event happen, but we had to do what’s right for the industry and what’s right for E3. We appreciate and understand that interested companies wouldn’t have playable demos ready and that resourcing challenges made being at E3 this summer an obstacle they couldn’t overcome. For those who did commit to E3 2023, we’re sorry we can’t put on the showcase you deserve and that you’ve come to expect from ReedPop’s event experiences..

You will also find confirmation on E3 2023 socials.

Update #3: It looks like the fate of E3 2023 is already sealed. IGN has reached an email that was supposed to have been sent out to those involved in organizing the fair - it shows that the event has indeed been canceled.

Update #2: This is not the end of cancellations. More publishers who have turned their backs on E3 and will not be appearing at the show are: Tencent and Devolver Digital.

Update: E3 2023 is really taking hits today. Two more companies announced that they are dropping out of the show: Sega and Level Infinite (via IGN).

Recent developments certainly do not inspire optimism in the organizers of this year's E3.

It was known that Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo would not participate in the event, and yesterday we learned that the following have dropped out of participation resigned another major publisher - Ubisoft.

E3 2023 in question

When the problems in front of the organizers seem to pile up without end, a suggestion has emerged online that the fair would not take place at all. Andy Robinson, a journalist with the Video Games Chronicle website, in a Twitter post reported that he has recently "not heard any good news" (implied: behind-the-scenes) about the fate of the upcoming event, and would not be surprised if it were canceled.

In response to the tweet, many commenters expressed their concern - after all, cancelling the fair would be a great shame, as expressed by Hollie Bennett of Frontier Developments studio:

[It would have been - editor's note] a shame, because these are certainly the lowest show prices ever, it was IMPERATIVE how much they dropped. They also have good plans [organizers - ed.], this year really seemed like a great time for E3 to return.

In response, Robinson wrote that he was positive about this year's show, but in the current situation there is too much hype around the whole E3 2023 thing to be sure of anything.

June 11-16 has been set as the date for the event. The same month will also see a lot of competing shows from companies that have pulled out of E3, including the PlayStation Showcase and Xbox Live Fest. Will this year's show even stand up to them? We'll probably find out soon enough.
