Epic Mod Lord of the Rings: Total War Remastered

The Lord of the Rings: Total War (Remastered) project, a revamp of the ambitious Tolkien mod for the strategy game Total War: Rome Remastered, has debuted.

The first version of the The Lord of the Rings: Total War (Remastered) mod, a total conversion mod that brings the strategy game Total War: Rome Remastered into the setting of Tolkien's Middle-earth, has been released.

The project focuses on recreating the wars and battles from the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and the authors modeled the game on Peter Jackson's movie series when creating the look of units and maps. The developers have prepared a new strategic map covering the whole of Middle-earth, a ton of new factions and a campaign for single player. There were also standalone "historical" skirmishes and scenarios. In addition, the developers heavily reworked the gameplay mechanics to reflect the changed realities.

  1. The Lord of the Rings: Total War (Remastered) - download from our FTP server. (the authors have given us permission to host a mirror)
  2. The Lord of the Rings: Total War (Remastered) on ModDB
  3. The Lord of the Rings: Total War - the original version of the mod, designed for Rome: Total War

As the title suggests, the project is based on the classic modification The Lord of the Rings: Total War, released in 2005 for Rome: Total War.

Compared to the original a ton of changes has been introduced. The creators thoroughly refreshed most visual elements, added new models, textures and visual effects. The content of the mod was also heavily expanded. The scale of the changes is best reflected by the fact that mod files in the Remastered version take up twenty times more space on disk than in the case of the original project for Rome: Total War.

Other notable Tolkien mods for strategy games

The Lord of the Rings: Total War (Remastered) is an excellent mod that can easily replace the official games developed using the brand's license.. This is important because professional developers do not flock to create strategies under this license. The last noteworthy game of this type was the sixteen year old The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-Earth II, so in practice, mods are the only way to play a strateg game in Middle-earth.. Fans also keep older games of this type alive.

Other notable projects of this type are:

  1. Middle-Earth Extended Edition - the mod expands the content of The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-Earth by adding new elements to it, as well as making playable those that are present in the game code, but for some reason were not used. The project offers additional units, buildings, technologies and several new factions. The level of expansion of combat mechanisms has also been increased.
  2. Age of the Ring - The mod expands and reworks The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle Earth II - The Rise of the Witch-King, adding elements from the Hobbit novel and all movie adaptations of the brand. Previously unavailable heroes and additional units have appeared, while existing factions have also been reworked and new ones introduced.
  3. The Last Alliance: Total War - Tolkien's total conversion mod for Shogun 2: Total War.
  4. Total War: Rise of Mordor - A total conversion of Total War: Attila, which moves the game's action from historical realities to Middle Earth.
  5. CK2: Middle Earth Project - in turn, this project is a modification to Crusader Kings II that enables us to play in Middle Earth.
