FPS drops, crashes, errors, and all kinds of performance issues are hitting RuneScape: Dragonwilds. But some of us have found fixes. Here’s what you can try.
The new RuneScape dropped yesterday, but it's not the free MMORPG, as some were expecting. RuneScape: Dragonwilds is a co-op survival game, more in the vein of Enshrouded or Valheim. It's out in Early Access on PC, with a possible console release down the line. Right now, there are no dedicated servers and player count is quite limited. That said, some players are having a tough time even getting into the game, with crashes at launch or after just a few minutes. Thankfully, there are a few fixes and performance tweaks you can try to get things running more smoothly.
If you're having trouble launching RuneScape: Dragonwilds, and you've already tried the usual fixes like verifying game files, updating your graphics drivers, and turning off overlays, here's something else you can try:
By default, the game launches in DirectX 12. If switching to Vulkan doesn't resolve crashes, try using '-dx11' to force DirectX 11. However, be aware it may cause other graphical issues.
The devs mentioned on the official Discord that crashes are pretty common with 13th and 14th Gen Intel desktop CPUs. To be honest, this problem is well documented, even by Intel itself. The recommended solution is to update your BIOS.
Performance issues can be tricky to pin down, it’s not always just bad optimization. With so many different PC setups out there, it’s hard to say exactly what’s causing the problem. That said, if you’re dealing with FPS drops in RuneScape: Dragonwilds, here are a few things worth trying:
The devs are aware of the problems and are already working on them. They’ve even shared a full list of known issues.

Been with gamepressure.com since 2019, mostly writing game guides but you can also find me geeking out about LEGO (huge collection, btw). Love RPGs and classic RTSs, also adore quirky indie games. Even with a ton of games, sometimes I just gotta fire up Harvest Moon, Stardew Valley, KOTOR, or Baldur's Gate 2 (Shadows of Amn, the OG, not that Throne of Bhaal stuff). When I'm not gaming, I'm probably painting miniatures or admiring my collection of retro consoles.
