Fortnite is killing Unreal Tournament

Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games studio, which developed games like Fortnite and Unreal Tournament, announced that the latter will be suspended for now. The reason for this is the extraordinary popularity of the first game.

Commenting Epic Games' opening of its own digital distribution platform, Tim Sweeney – head of the studio – informed that further development of the popular Unreal Tournament shooter gets halted. The reason is the incredible popularity of Fortnite. The constantly expanding megahit battle royale pulls developers away from other projects.

Unreal Tournament is still available in the store but isn’t actively developed. We’ve recently worked with GOG on making classic Epic Games titles available and we’re planning to bring more of them to the store in their original glory – Tim Sweeney told Variety.

Unreal Tournament hasn't received any updates since last summer. The title has never been officially binned – there are no plans to shut down the servers – but if nothing changes, there is a possibility that such a decision will be made sooner or later. A similar situation occurred in the case of another Epic Games’ title overshadowed by FortniteParagon, although the unusual Unreal Tournament business model (more about it below) may slightly postpone the end of the game.

The last title of the Unreal Tournament franchise has an unusual idea for development, as well as earning money. The production is available completely free of charge and without microtransactions. In addition, the community has access to modding tools, through which they can create their own tweaks and add-ons. Where, in all this, is money for the developers? Community-generated add-ons can be sold in the store, and Epic gets a cut from each transaction.

Unreal Tournament is a series of classic, dynamic FPS games, focused on multiplayer gameplay. Alpha tests of the latest installment of the franchise started in August 2014 (only on PCs) and have never been finished.
