GTA 6 and Switch 2 set to push gaming industry to record heights. Meanwhile, gamers are playing fewer and fewer games
The value of the video game industry is expected to exceed $90 billion in the coming years. Meanwhile, the average gamer is playing fewer and fewer titles.

The latest report, The PC & Console Gaming 2025, created by Newzoo, has been published. From the nearly 100-page document, we can learn a few interesting things about the video game industry - for instance, how its value will increase in the coming years.
GTA 6 and Switch 2 will make gaming industry bigger
According to the authors of the report, the industry is projected to be valued at 92.7 billion dollars in 2027 (currently it stands at 85.2 billion dollars). Below you will find a chart showing the estimated revenues for the years 2015-2027.
According to forecasts, the value of the PC market is expected to increase by 2.6% between 2024 and 2027. In the same period, consoles will grow even stronger, by 7%. What is supposed to be the cause of this impressive growth? Of course, the upcoming GTA VI (releasing exclusively on PS5 and XSX/S) and the recently showcased Switch 2. The title from Rockstar Games is also suspected to establish new game prices permanently, a trend somewhat started by Nintendo with the high cost of Mario Kart World.
Players prefer old games
The duration for playing each title in 2024 is also interesting. Fans definitely prefer older titles, released at least 6 years ago - they make up 57% of all the games we spent our free time on. They include, among others, Fortnite (9.3%), Minecraft (4.7%), and Roblox (3.7%).
Titles that have been on the market for 1 to 5 years make up 32%. The latest releases, such as EA Sports FC 25 or Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, however, only make up 12%. All the aforementioned figures regarding playing time are quite similar to the 2023 results shared by Newzoo.
PlayStation is up, Xbox is slightly down
It remains unchanged that the previously mentioned EA Sports FC and Call of Duty series are more frequently played on consoles. Below you will find a graphic presenting the games that were the most popular on a given platform in 2024. What's interesting, compared to 2023, the playtime on PlayStation consoles has significantly increased by 21%.
Moreover, the report shows that since 2021, players have been playing fewer games. They usually settle for 1-3 selected titles. Microsoft may have big reasons to worry, as the shifting trend is most visible with Xbox.
