Heroes of Might and Magic 2 Gets Fan-made Remaster

Version 1.0 of Fheroes2, an ambitious fan project revamping the classic turn-based strategy game Heroes of Might and Magic II, has been released.

Recent days have been a good time for fan remasters of old hits. On Tuesday, we wrote about the release of the full version of The Force Engine for Star Wars: Dark Forces, and now version 1.0 edition of Fheroes2 has arrived, which refreshes the classic turn-based strategy game Heroes of Might and Magic II: The Succession Wars.

  1. Fheroes2 - download the mod

It's an open-source project that provides a new and significantly improved engine for Heroes of Might and Magic 2. It needs the game files to work, but you can also use it to download a demo of HoMM2, to see how the mod performs in action.

The advantages of the new engine are numerous. First of all, we get compatibility with modern PCs and operating systems, and the option to play inhigh resolutions (including widescreen). Fheroes2 also offers heavily improved AI and fixes several hundred technical bugs and a tonof imperfections that the original developers left in the game.

The project also introduces many new features, such as automatic battle resolution, useful when we don't want to waste time on skirmishes in which we have too much of an advantage to lose. Of course, if we don't like the result, the clash can be repeated, this time personally taking command of the army.

The mod also heavily improves the controls and interface, both in terms of QoL and the data we have access to.

All in all, it effectively refreshes the game and makes Fheroes2 the best way to play Heroes of Might and Magic II: The Succession Wars on modern PCs.

Not only Fheroes2

Fheroes2 belongs to the category known as open-source game implementations. Projects of this type enable us to play classic games on modern PCs without dealing with emulators, changing settings or installing missing elements. Quite a few of them (though not all) also introduce gameplay and visual improvements. Such mods are available for such games as RollerCoaster Tycoon II (OpenRCT2) Caesar III (Augustus), Diablo (DevilutionX), UFO: Enemy Unknown (OpenXcom), Chris Sawyer's Locomotion (OpenLoco), Cannon Fodder (Open Fodder), Syndicate (FreeSynd), Syndicate Wars (Syndicate Wars Port), The Settlers (Freeserf), The Settlers II (Return to the Roots or Dune 2 (Dune Legacy).

Projects of this type differ from open-source game clones in that they require the files of the games they remaster to work.
