It Takes Only a Week to Make a Diablo Clone These Days

One youtuber decided to prove that a week's work is enough to create a fully functional diablo clone. It turns out that this is possible provided that we use Unreal Engine and ready tools, models and maps.

Diablo in a week? Why not!

IN A NUTSHELL:

  1. One Youtuber decided to take a week to create a working action RPG;
  2. The work did not require coding and was based mainly on free assests available for Unreal Engine;
  3. The game will soon be available for download from the creator's website.

On Fat Dino channel on YouTube, there is a video that sheds some light on the causes of the indie flood on Steam. Its creator decided to prove that in just a week, a fully functional hack'n'slash can be created. The effect of youtuber's work, titled Yet Another Diablo Ripoff, looks surprisingly professional and at first glance does not differ significantly from other representatives of the genre. With an encouraging profile on Steam and a cleverly crafted trailer someone could sell YADR as another "ambitious project".

The secret lies in the use of ready-to-use - and often free - tools, models, icons and animations that the Unreal Engine ecosystem abounds in. In YADR we can find the monster and heroes known from the online action game Paragon, while the maps come from the Fantasy and Medieval Architecture Kit and Multistory Dungeons. The game can be saved with UGameInstance.

Of course some compromises were necessary - the interface looks very basic, we have only one class (initially two were planned) and simple character progression system (after gaining a level or two we automatically get another skill). Additionally, the game is devoid of sound effects and consists of only three maps: a village, a dungeons and a boss fight arena. However, it is worth remembering that YADR is the result of only one man's week of work. What could have been made by a five-man team across two months?

What's important is that the development of this hack'n'slash didn't require any coding - this was even the initial idea of the project. All the creator needed to work was knowledge about the technology developed by Epic Games combined with the ability to create relatively simple scripts. With all this in mind, it's hardly surprising that Steam is flooded every day with clones of various known titles.

It's worth noting that in the coming days Yet Another Diablo Ripoff will be available for free on the website of its creator.
