Today's 24-minute Pokemon Presents finally revealed something fans have been waiting for: a brand new mega evolution, and it is for a fan favorite.
Today, The Pokémon Company held a Pokémon Presents presentation and revealed a brand new mega Pokémon that will be available in Pokémon Legends: Z-A: Mega Dragonite. This is exciting for a few reasons. One, this not only gives a long-time classic and fan-favorite Pokémon a powerful new ability, but it also essentially proves that Legends: Z-A will have more brand new Mega Pokémon in store. Until now, no new forms or new Pokémon had been revealed.
The Pokémon Presents only lasted twenty-four minutes, though, that does make it one of the longer presentations in the last few years. The bulk of the showcase was smaller announcements, including updates on Pokémon GO, Pokémon Masters EX, Pokémon Unite, and more. There were even updates on two stop-motion animated TV series, if you can believe that. The presentation also shadow dropped a new Pokémon puzzle game for both Nintendo Switch and mobile devices: Pokémon Friends. This simple puzzle game seems geared towards a younger audience, but challenges players with a new puzzle every day. We also got a deeper look at the upcoming battle-focused game, Pokémon Champions.
Pokémon Legends: Z-A is the next mainline game in the Pokémon video game series. It’s still planned to launch later this year on October 16th, 2025 for both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, though it seems like the newer console will have an upgraded version of the experience. This game is set in the Kalos region’s Lumiose City, from the Pokemon X and Y games. These were the first games where Mega Evolution was introduced, so it makes sense that this is the game where the mechanic would finally make its return.
Today’s presentation showed much of what we already know about the game. But introduced a few new features. Players will join a group called Team MZ with a few other trainers, take on side quests within the city by helping Emma, a detective, and customize your appearance from hairstyle to clothing. It also looks like there will be some kind of equivalent of Gym Battles. As you move up the in the Z-A Royale, there will be more challenging trainers along the way. Today’s presentation showcased Corbeau, the Boss of the Rust Syndicate.
Finally, a strange phenomenon is happening around the city. Wild Pokemon appear to be mega evolving on their own. This seems to result in challenging arena battles where the player has to take on the mega Pokémon. This was the moment in the trailer that revealed the brand new Mega Dragonite. Like many other Mega Evolutions, the visual change will take some getting used to. Mega Dragonite has huge wings on its head and has an elongated tail with a pearl near the end, resembling its previous evolutions Dragonair and Dratini. This is a clever use of mega evolution, because Dragonite has always stood out as being very unlike its previous forms, and this brings them closer together in some ways. We still don’t know any further details about Mega Dragonite’s other changes, such as new typing, new abilities, or anything like that.
Pokémon Legends: Z-A is only a few months away, so chances are we will learn more soon. With this reveal, the possibility of other brand new mega evolutions has never been higher. This virtually guarantees that the starter Pokémon will also receive mega evolutions, so that means we will likely see Mega Meganium, Mega Feraligatr, and Mega Emboar. Pokémon Legends: Arceus gave each starter a regional form unique to that game’s region, Legends: Z-A may do something similar, but it seems like at the very least they will get a mega form.
