Upgraded Switch Coming This Year

Nintendo has ambitious plans for its flagship Switch console. An upgraded version of the hybrid device is due out this year, and the Japanese giant is also aiming to beat the sales performance of the Nintendo Wii.

Bloomberg journalist Takashi Mochizuki, citing an article by Japanese website Nikkei, reported that Nintendo plans to produce about 30 million units of Switch this fiscal year (the period between April 2021 and March 2022). In addition, a new version of the device with improved graphics is expected to hit the market.

The Kyoto-based giant sold nearly 80 million consoles worldwide by the end of 2020. The company expects that 2021 will close with a result of 110 million. If this goal is met then Switch will beat the result of Nintendo Wii (101.63 million consoles sold).

This is not the first information this year that says that the Japanese company will release a more powerful version of its console. The first rumors appeared in February, and more detailed leaks indicate that the new Switch will have an OLED screen and 4K output, as well as processing power on the level of PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One. The "pro" version of Switch is expected to be released later this year.
