CD Projekt No Longer at the Top of Polish Gamedev; New King is Here

The release of Cyberpunk 2077 became the seed of CD Projekt's problems. Since 2020, the former leader of Polish gamedev has been suffering a series of stock market declines. Meanwhile, the company's problems were exploited by another player, which claimed the crown of the most valuable company in the market.

Where one loses, the other benefits. These are the words that come to mind when hearing about Techland, the new king of Polish gamedev. According to the latest reports from Business Insider [in Polish], the Wroclaw-based developer, which became famous for its excellent series of post-apocalyptic sandbox games Dying Light, has overtaken the previous leader in the category of most valuable Polish game developer, CD Projekt.

It's good, and it will be even better

The aforementioned service, based on calculations by Puls Biznesu, reported that Techland's value currently oscillates at PLN 10.6 billion (around $2.2 billion).

This sum is the result of calculations based on the remuneration resulting from the redemption of shares. In turn, based on the arrangements for next year's dividend the company's management expects a profit in excess of PLN 624 million (almost $130 million).

CDPR is getting cheaper

The situation of CD Projekt looks quite different. According to estimates by Puls Biznesu, the company, which still at the end of 2020 could boast a staggering value of PLN 40 billion (almost $8.5 billion), is now valued at less than PLN 10 billion..

The miraculous impact of zombies

The upward trend, in which the Wroclaw-based developer currently finds itself, is due primarily to the well-received sequel to Dying Light. The second part of the action game debuted in February, instantly winning the approval of many fans.

The great interest in the game has added fuel to Techland's fire, as the studio has already announced work on a story DLC for Dying Light 2. Not only that, the company has already made preparations for a brand new, high-budget AAA title (we wrote about it here).

All this will surely only strengthen Techland's position as a leader in the video game industry in Poland.

Unlucky Cyberpunk 2077

CDPR's problems stem mostly from the long-awaited Cyberpunk 2077. This unlucky production is probably haunting the company's owners, because from the moment of its release the company's troubles began. The title, which was supposed to take the studio to the top, turned out to be an an underdeveloped crap, dragging the developer to the bottom.

Numerous problems with the title affected lack of adequate development of The Witcher: Monster Slayer, another delay of the next-gen Wild Hunt, or the continued waiting for the story expansion for our Night City adventure.

All this, in turn, combined together, has caused CD Projekt to fall from its seat as the leader of the Polish gaming industry.
