The director of HBO's The Last of Us confessed why an important scene related to Bill and Frank's story from the third episode was not shown.

The third episode of The Last of Us, titled Until the Last Days, is radically different from the others. As the only episode, it virtually entirely abandons the main characters to focus on someone else. It brings the story of two lovers, Bill and Frank, who began and ended their love in an apocalyptic world.
Lasting more than an hour, the episode focuses almost exclusively on the male duo, and it has divided the fans. Despite this, the episode gained numerous enthusiasts, especially among those who were unfamiliar with Bill's original story, presented in the adapted game by Naughty Dog.
After learning about this touching love story, many viewers were intrigued by the fact that the filmmakers, after the characters took their own lives, chose not to show Bill and Frank's bodies. The director of the episode - Peter Hoar - spoke on the matter. In an interview with Deadline he confessed that it was not an easy decision to make, but in the end the creators wanted to distinguish the episode by not including a frame that traumatizes viewers. There is, after all, no shortage of similar ones throughout the series.
"It was always in the script not to show their dead bodies. It's also something we discussed as a group at the very beginning. It's not unreasonable. I think Neil Druckmann would say that the world of The Last of Us is very brutal. And in a violent world, people will be hurt and experience terrible injuries to their bodies and minds. I think Craig [Mazin] felt that we just didn't need that. It wasn't necessary."
Despite the success of the episode, in an earlier interview Craig Mazin confessed, that the second season of the show will not present a special episode similar to the one about Bill and Frank.
The Last of Us is available on HBO Max.
