The Witcher: Monster Slayer Abandoned; CD Projekt Kills Off Another Project

Gwent is not the only game that CD Projekt intends to put to kill off. A similar fate also awaits The Witcher: Monster Slayer.

Today, CD Projekt Group announced [in Polish] the imminent death of another game - after Gwent. This time the sword of destiny has hit The Witcher: Monster Slayer, the Pokemon Go-inspired augmented reality game.

Released in July 2021, the game by studio Spokko is still available for free on Android and iOS mobile devices.

  • New players will be able to check it out - downloading it from Google Play and Apple App Store - until January 31, 2023.
  • In turn, existing players will have the opportunity to continue playing until June 30, 2023. After that date, the project will be officially closed.

We don't know exactly what is the reasons behind this decision by CD Projekt Group - the announcement only mentions its compatibility with the company's current business strategy. One can guess that The Witcher: Monster Slayer simply wasn't bringing in the expected profits. Admittedly, Pokemon Go is still very popular and receiving new updates, but the fad for "Witcher Pokemon" passed rather quickly.

Polish studio Spokko - part of the CD Projekt Group since August 2018 - will be completely absorbed by the parent company next year, i.e. it will cease to exist as a separate entity. Some of its employees will be delegated to other projects.
