The Electronic Arts-backed Speedhunters website has been suspended. The reason is said to be the alleged „shelving” of the Need for Speed series.

A few days ago, Electronic Arts announced the closure of servers for four games - Need for Speed Rivals was among them. Fortunately, the game will not disappear for good, as players will still be able to play in offline mode. However, it is possible that we will say goodbye to the entire Need for Speed series for a longer time, which the publisher allegedly "put it aside for an unforeseeable future".

Need for Speed fades into the shadows

The source of information is Matthew Everingham, a photojournalist and long-time collaborator of the Speedhunters service. He made a post on his Instagram in which he informed that the EA-supported website has been suspended, which is a result of putting the Need for Speed series aside.

Speedhunters got left. EA has suspended Need For Speed, which means no further funding for the service.

Speedhunters is a blog that, although not directly related to NFS, promoted car culture. The last post appeared on April 8th of this year and since that moment the service remains inactive. The same applies to its social media and store.

No official statement has been issued regarding the fate of the popular series, but the publisher's internal decisions indicate that it is uncertain. However, if the series were to return, it would likely not happen until after the premiere of the next installment of Battlefield.

In September 2023, EA announced that part of the Criterion team (developers of the NFS series) was transferred to work on Battlefield 6. Meanwhile, in February of this year, we learned that this happened to all the employees of the studio. At the same time, players were assured that the new NFS will definitely return, so there is hope that the promise will be kept.

The latest installment of the series - Need for Speed Unbound - debuted in 2022 and was met with positive reviews from critics, but more importantly, with mixed opinions from players. On Steam, the game has over 40 thousand reviews, and only 61% of them are positive. Most players abandoned it after just three months of playing and returned to the previous installments.
