Resident Evil 4 Remake: How to repair the Combat Knife?
In Resident Evil 4 Remake, Leon's knife wears out. Here you will learn what actions damage the knife, how to repair the Combat Knife and increase its durability, and how to obtain smaller knives.
In RE4 Remake, you may encounter a problem - continuous use of Combat Knife can damage it up to the point of completely depleting its Durability bar. On this page of our guide, we explain how the knife wears itself out while using, alternatives in form of Kitchen Knife and Boot Knife, and finally how to repair Combat Knife and increase its Durability.
Durability and knife wear

One of the most important novelties of the remake is that Leon's knife gradually suffers wear and tear during use, up to the point where it's no longer usable.
You can find the Durability bar next to the health bar in the bottom right corner of the screen.

Combat Knife is damaged to the greatest extent by:
- Blocking strong attacks from opponents (L1/LB) - these include attacks with tentacles or chainsaws;
- defending yourself after being caught by an opponent - instead of mashing the action button, you can press the button to stab the enemy.

Knife's Durability is also affected by:
- stealth attacks, i.e., those initiated once you are behind your opponent's back
- Killing enemies - i.e. finishing the opponent with the knife once downed
Other knives

There are other equippable knives in the game which can serve as temporary replacements for the "main" Combat Knife. These are Kitchen Knife and Boot Knife - for example, they can be found while exploring or on the bodies of defeated opponents.

To pick up such a knife, you need to have a free slot in your inventory. Once the knife is in the inventory, you need to Equip it for Leon to use it as a replacement for Combat Knife.

Once that happens, there will be an icon representing the knife and the number of them in the bottom right corner of the screen. When such a knife gets destroyed with use (they are generally less durable than Combat Knife) it will be replaced with another of the same type from the inventory (provided you have more of them). When you destroy all replacement knives, the game will equip Combat Knife as the active one back.
Repairing and increasing Combat Knife's durability

Combat Knife can be repaired. However, the temporary replacements, once exhausted, cannot be repaired. To repair the Combat Knife, you need to visit a Merchant and switch to Tune Up tab - there you'll find the Repair option. You have to pay for the repairs with coins and the overall cost depends on how damaged the Combat Knife is.
To prevent depleting the blade too fast, check the upgrades from the Durability category - each increases the overall durability of the knife i.e. it will be able to withstand more attacks before it wears out completely.
