While traveling through the wild areas of New England, from time to time you will come across mysterious, cylindrical containers emanating a purple glow. They are called Cursed chests, and are said to contain valuable treasure if you manage to open them. To do that, in every instance, you'll need to perform a special ritual that requires certain ingredients. Below we provide the most important information regarding this type of chests.
How to unlock Unbounding?
Shortly after the conclusion of The Dark Woods arc, the titular pair of Banishers will get invited to Witch's island. During one of the conversations with the Seeker residing there, you'll learn the story of Fear-god Waterbury and his experiments with magic and sealing chests. The Seeker will also reveal that inside his abandoned hut, there may be a clue regarding the way of unlocking Cursed chests. This will activate the Spirit Unbounding side quest that completing leaves you with knowledge on how to perform a cleansing ritual that unlocks such chests.
The hut of the magic-wielding deceased can be found north-east from Hunter's Camp. To unlock access to the interior of the hut, you'll need to destroy the wall with Outburst. Inside, you'll find Waterbury's notes along with a special incantation that when used on chests opens them.
How to open Cursed chests?
Obtaining the incantation is only the beginning. To perform it and open the Cursed chest, you'll also need to find three wooden figurines that are most of the time found in the near vicinity of the chest in question.

Once you got all 3 of the figurines, approach the chest. A ritual circle will appear, at which you need to choose Unbounding from the list. After a short animation, the curse on the chest will be lifted, and you'll be able to collect the treasure inside.
