Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince. The best couch co-op games for single screen
Table of Contents
Co-op type: campaign designed for 1-3 players in the classic mode (each plays a different hero) and for 1-4 in a variation (you can play, for instance, four mages)
- Genre: puzzle/platform game
- Platform: PC, PS4, XONE, Switch
- Release date: October 2019
Trine 2, the best of Frozenbyte's hybrids of platformers and puzzle games, allows you to play three characters with vastly different abilities – a strong warrior, a clever thief, and a knowledgeable magician with useful spells. In the case of a single-player playthrough, one can freely switch between the three protagonists, as in iconic The Lost Vikings, using their unique abilities to solve environmental puzzles.
The game, on the other hand, spreads its wings when one or two additional players join the game. Then there are more characters on the screen, and the simultaneous use of their abilities can produce interesting results – for example, the mage can float the platforms with the thief on them, allowing him or her to reach inaccessible places.
Play the entire series… well, maybe except the Trine 3
It's commonly said that part two is the best part of the Trine series. However, do not forget about the others. The first edition can still be enjoyed today. Part three is much weaker, but it also finds some fans. With Trine 4, the authors are back on track and the game is just as sweet as Trine 2.
Much of the fun is based on this type of combination designed to fully exploit the potential of an advanced physical engine. However, one cannot fail to mention the second asset of Trine 4 – a fairytale visual setting, which attacks the eyes with beautiful colors and an original, realistic atmosphere.
Children of Morta
Co-op type: cooperation for two players
- Genre: Action RPG/roguelike
- Platform: PC, PS4, XONE, Switch
- Release date: September 2019
Children of Morta tells the story of the Bergson family and the titular mountain. The family has to face bloodthirsty creatures that the local residents have turned into due to contamination. Contrary to appearances, the plot, especially the scenes with relationships between family members, is a strong point of the title. The game is published by the 11 bit studios.
The game will appeal to players who enjoy challenges, as it is a roguelike rather than a roguelite. In co-op, it's not necessarily easier, but it's definitely more enjoyable. The game's core consists of expeditions, during which we must face all kinds of evil. The decision of who we choose to play as is already important. Each family member possesses unique abilities, leading to diverse styles of gameplay. We have here a set of very well-known "classes", including a warrior with a shield, an archer, and a rogue wielding daggers. The game doesn't try to reinvent the wheel - instead, the devs have refined all the most important mechanics and wrapped them in a great plot and excellent graphic design.
Pixel art fans will be in heaven. The retro-style graphics are surprising due to their exceptional attention to detail, which can be admired for long periods. Apart from the beautiful pixel art, we also have advanced lighting effects here. However, they don't affect the system requirements. Children of Morta will even run on a calculator.
