Hide and Shriek

PC

October 25, 2016

Action, FPP, Horror, Internet, Multiplayer, For 2 Players.

An action horror game for two players. It is a variation on a game of hide and seek. Hide and Shriek was developed by FunCom, the creators of games like The Longest Journey, The Secret World and Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures. The story background of the title tells about the rivalry between two schools of magic. During the Halloween night the adepts of both schools decide to scare their rivals. The gameplay is focused on 1 on 1 matches that last ten minutes. In that time, the players have to use various magic tricks to scare the opponent. Traps, dark spells and terrifying masks are very helpful in that. What’s interesting, the player cannot see his opponent, so in order to track him he must look for clues and signs of his presence such as levitating objects or opened door. The action in Hide and Shriek is shown from a first-person perspective. The game offers graphics filled with details and suggestive sounds – not only the atmospheric music can influence player’s senses (and nerves), but screams and paranormal noises as well.

An extensive logic game belonging to the so-called match 3 subgenre; it was developed by Playrix Games. The player assumes the role of a gardener whose task is to restore a parcel back to its former glory and discover the secrets of the place along the way. The entire game is set in a large garden divided into several sections. In terms of mechanics, typical "match-3-objects" rules were applied here. Thus the player's goal is to match pictures of different plants together to create spectacular-looking combinations, which results in scoring an adequate number of points. Those can be spent on gradual expanding of the parcel. The experience is diversified by numerous bonuses and hacks, such as stopping the passage of time for a short while. Between subsequent levels, the player is taken to story-based segments - during those, the protagonist can talk to different characters, buy new garden accessories and plant more and more beautiful pieces of greenery.

Lamplight City is a classic point-and-click adventure game developed by Grundislav Games in cooperation with Wadjet Eye Games. The game’s visuals follow the retro pixel-art convention. In Lamplight City, the player gets to explore a fictional city of New Bretagne, which features a setting resembling Victorian England. The main protagonist of the game is Miles Fordham - a private detective, who is trying to solve the mysterious murder of his former partner, who talks to him from beyond the grave. On his journey, the player has to solve five cases, each one filled with false leads and potential suspects. Player's decisions might have certain long-term consequences and lead to different story endings. The gameplay focuses on the exploration of the titular city, interrogating witnesses, and gathering pieces of evidence. Unlike most point-and-click adventure games, in Lamplight City the players do not have a separate inventory menu, and all the case-related pieces of information are written down in a special notepad.

The plot of Runner3 is a continuation of the adventures of CommenderVideo, the hero from the previous games. The gameplay didn't change much when compared to the previous titles but there are a few new features and improvements which are the result of community feedback. During the game, our character runs automatically to the right and our goal is to lead him through dozens of various levels and avoid numerous traps by either jumping over or sliding under them. As usual for this series, all actions are performed accordingly to music's rhythm. Each action creates a sound and the soundtrack's tempo determines how fast our hero runs and the number of hazards that await him.

A two-dimensional metroidvania action game developed by independent studio Thunder Lotus Games – the producer of the warmly-received Jotun. In Sundered, the player assumes the role of a wanderer who travels through a ruined, post-apocalyptic world. The story of the game is strongly connected to its mechanics, as the price of the progress of the protagonist is paid with his humanity – what powers the player decides to wield, will have impact on the ending of the game. The protagonist is traveling mostly through randomly generated cave complexes and underground tunnels. On his paths he encounters various enemies, including powerful bosses, defeating which requires using thoughtful tactics. As the player progresses through the game, he obtains better equipment and ancient artifacts that enables him to develop abilities. This unlocks access to new locations, even stronger enemies and better items. Sundered has two-dimensional, hand drawn graphics the style of which is similar to games like Jotun and The Banner Saga.

All of this takes place in a virtual world inhabited by the player community, which allows us to, for example, establish various kinds of cooperation and take over our competitors’ businesses. Furthermore, the expansion includes a story campaign based on historical events - it comprises 12 scenarios in total. Among the novelties, one will find a system of specializations that for instance, allows the player to familiarize their tank drivers with the Auftragstaktik doctrine or create Waffen SS divisions. Particular units gain experience on the battlefield and can be transferred both between separate scenarios and entire campaigns. Both the visuals and the gameplay formula remain unchanged in the expansion. As a result, the game is still all about turn-based battles taking place on maps filled with hexagons.

The action is presented from a side perspective. The gameplay mechanic, which the game borrows from the platformer genre, is the character movement, which means that we need to climb and jump on platforms. The plot and puzzles are the game's most interesting features during world exploration. The girl can use the help of a mysterious stone, Arca, to solve those puzzles. Players act as the so-called “Great Mayor” managing a village. Gameplay focuses on gathering resources and progressive development of our town with public and industrial buildings, with the proper assignment of tasks playing a crucial role. In the beginning the dinosaurs are a major threat to our settlers, but later we can tame them to get powerful, but risky allies. Dino Frontier offers good looking comic book-like visuals.

Adventure, Crowdfunding, Humorous, Point-and-click, Science Fiction, Singleplayer.

A three-dimensional adventure game funded via Kickstarter, and a debut production from the Irish studio BillyGoat Entertainment. Her Majesty’s Spiffing is a humorous story taking place in modern times. The Queen of Great Britain has decided to add new lands to the empire, but the modern times don’t allow a simple conquest of the neighboring countries anymore. As a result, the Queen has established Special Planetary Investigative Force for Inhabiting New Galaxies – a government organization that prepares for the first manned space flight in the history of Great Britain, and the foundation of the Galactic British Empire. The mechanics of Her Majesty’s Spiffing are similar to what can be experienced in classic point-and-click adventure games – the creators have been visibly inspired by the games from the hands of developers such as Tim Shafer, Ron Gilbert, Gary Winnick, or Dave Grossman. Therefore, the players are occupied with exploration and search for items that are necessary for clearing the encountered obstacles, as well as conducting dialogues that push the plot forward. The humorous theme is complemented by cartoonish visuals.

At the core of gameplay lies asymmetrical multiplayer designed for up to 6 players. In Last Year five players play as typical American teenagers, while the sixth assumes the role of a psychopath, hunting down the rest. In the game each hero has a particular role to play, and the key to success is proper cooperation and using each character’s strengths. It’s also important to gather resources and items, which can be used to create impromptu weapons. Also the individual killers have unique abilities – each of them offers different killing techniques. The deadly competition takes place in various locations. There, the players’ task is – as you may easily guess – to use the items appearing on the maps and survive the nightmare by any means possible.

The players can choose from a number of licensed vehicles from renowned car companies. We begin the game with only a few basic vehicles, but continuous winning unlocks more and more powerful, high-end machines. A garage was left at our disposal – aside from storing our vehicles, we can upgrade or tune multiple aspects of each car. Interestingly enough, the garage is interactive, forcing the player to unlock some of its functionalities. The game is characteristic for its high realism, unusual for mobile titles, while the physics engine is quite capable of recreating the cars’ handling, with separate calculations for the engine, drive, suspension, and aerodynamics.

A logic game which is a new entry in the famed Angry Birds series. This time, we are dealing with a game inspired by match-3 (tile matching) games, but some of the mechanics are a bit different from what the genre has accustomed us to. The players are facing levels of differing shape, filled with tiles and balloons whose colors correspond to the colors of the birds trapped inside. Our job is to free the required number of birds, which means puncturing the right balloons. However, we can only do so when there are two balloons of the same color right next to each other. Similarly to other titles, Angry Birds Blast forces us to think two steps ahead, a prerequisite that often proves to be invaluable when attempting to gain the desired combination. The gameplay is further complemented by a limited number of moves, as well as numerous special items that yield certain bonuses.

The typical genre staples are diversified by the fact that the rescued animals (a frog, kangaroo, pelican and a panda) join our group, and can help us during subsequent levels (each stage allows us to choose a pair of heroes), as each of them has their own unique abilities that influence the gameplay.

A free tool for the owners of the PC edition of Halo 5: Guardians, acting both as map editor and a way to play fan made levels. Initially, it has been the work of the team at 343 Industries and was supposed to be a PC version of the popular Forge mode, known from the main entries in the Halo series. Additionally, the players could create their own maps or game modes, than use them in Halo 5 on consoles. Those levels can be created from scratch or by modifying sandbox maps prepared by the developers. However, the first huge update for Halo 5: Forge brought the option of testing player creations, making it a full-scale multiplayer shooter, acting as a substitute of the multiplayer mode in Halo 5, offering custom matches for up to 16 players.
