Mafia: The Old Country is the fourth installment of the Mafia series. It is also its prequel, set at the beginning of the 20th century. The development of this action-adventure game was handled by Hangar 13 studio. It has games like Mafia III and Mafia: Definitive Edition in its portfolio. The release was overseen by the company 2K Games, which manages the brand.

Gameplay without an open world

Unlike previous parts of the series, Mafia: The Old Country does not provide us with an open world. Instead, we receive a linear adventure that takes us to various corners of Sicily, allowing us to familiarize ourselves with the beginnings of organized crime, which eventually made its way from there to the United States.

Mafia: The Old Country uses its stunning setting to tell a familiar story about loyalty and family that's propped up by its cast of characters.

Push Square: 6 / 10 by Sammy Barker

Mafia: The Old Country doesn't have enough gameplay ideas to carry its relatively short running time. While the fundamentals here are fine, an overemphasis on insta-fail stealth sequences and floaty shootouts makes for a forgettable campaign, even if it takes place within a stunningly detailed world. The performances are extraordinary but the story itself is predictable, leaving you with a phenomenally acted crime tale that you may admire in the moment but will struggle to remember once the credits roll.

User Reviews Summary generated by AI

The main pros of the game

  • Visuals and Atmosphere: The game is praised for its stunning graphics and detailed recreation of early 1900s Sicily. Many players noted the beautiful landscapes and the immersive atmosphere that captures the essence of the time period.
  • Storytelling: The narrative, while sometimes predictable, is engaging and well-written, with strong character development. The story is said to evoke the classic Mafia themes of loyalty and betrayal.
  • Voice Acting and Soundtrack: The voice acting, particularly in Sicilian dialect, is highly regarded, and the soundtrack effectively enhances the game's mood.
  • Gameplay Mechanics: Some players appreciated the return to a more linear, story-driven gameplay style reminiscent of the earlier Mafia titles, which contrasts with the open-world approach of *Mafia III*.

The main cons of the game

  • Short Length: Many reviews mentioned that the game is relatively short, with playtimes averaging around 10-15 hours, leading some to feel it wasn't worth the full price.
  • Predictable Story: While the story is engaging, several players criticized it for being clichéd and predictable, lacking significant twists or depth.
  • Repetitive Gameplay: The gameplay loop, which often involves stealth sections followed by shootouts, can become monotonous. Knife fights, while initially engaging, were noted to be overly repetitive.
  • Technical Issues: Players reported bugs, crashes, and performance issues, particularly related to the Unreal Engine 5, which affected the overall experience.
  • Limited Exploration: Despite the large map, the game restricts players to a linear path, making the world feel empty and devoid of meaningful side activities or interactions.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Open World Exploration: Many players expressed disappointment over the lack of a true open-world experience, with limited opportunities to explore outside of the main missions.
  • Side Quests and Activities: There is a notable absence of side missions or optional content that would allow for deeper engagement with the game world.
  • Character Customization and Interaction: Players felt that the game could have benefited from more robust character customization options and interactions with NPCs, which were largely absent.

Summary

  • In summary, *Mafia: The Old Country* is appreciated for its visuals, atmosphere, and storytelling but criticized for its short length, predictability, repetitiveness, and technical issues. Players recommend waiting for a sale before purchasing, especially if they are seeking a deeper, more open-world experience akin to earlier Mafia titles.
