Mafia: The Old Country is the fourth installment of the Mafia series. It is also its prequel, set at the beginning of the 20th century. The development of this action-adventure game was handled by Hangar 13 studio. It has games like Mafia III and Mafia: Definitive Edition in its portfolio. The release was overseen by the company 2K Games, which manages the brand.

Gameplay without an open world

Unlike previous parts of the series, Mafia: The Old Country does not provide us with an open world. Instead, we receive a linear adventure that takes us to various corners of Sicily, allowing us to familiarize ourselves with the beginnings of organized crime, which eventually made its way from there to the United States.

Rectify Gaming: 9 / 10 by Will "FncWill" Hogeweide

Mafia: The Old Country is the crown jewel of the series. A story that makes you bleed, laugh, and curse in Sicilian all in the same breath. The graphics will blow your fedora off, the gameplay’s smoother than Sinatra, and the story’s got enough heart to remind you why family, no matter the sacrifice, always comes first. So pour yourself a glass of red, light a cigar, and remember… loyalty and ma familia above all.

Mafia: The Old Country pairs simple, standard mechanics with a predictable mob narrative, but its gorgeous period setting and tight, story-driven run make for a thrilling experience.

Xbox Tavern: 7.2 / 10 by James Davie

If you're up for a fantastic yarn and gorgeous sights, Mafia: The Old Country is outstanding, meaning you'll be totally sold by its presentation. The moments, the story and the characters are top-notch, and there's not much to criticize on that front. However, The Old Country is old-fashioned with forced and bland stealth sections, predictable gunplay, and a lack of newness when it comes to the game's mechanics—also the knife fights are unexciting and rote. You can have a blast with The Old Country if gameplay isn't your utmost concern, but if it is, you may need to absolve it of its sins, because while the gunplay is functional and enjoyable enough, it lacks nuance and weapon variety. Altogether, The Old Country is definitely worth taking in, but when gameplay is king, you may feel underwhelmed that it spends more time focusing on its visual and storytelling qualities than it does on crafting a sophisticated playable experience.
