An economic strategy game created by an experienced studio, Gaming Minds, in which the player becomes an owner of a railroad company. Their task is to take control of the entire market and turn their company into an empire. Since the game takes place in XIX and XX century, the technology of the entire society is constantly changing. The key to success is to not only build new railroads and invest in new trains and train stations but also to use innovative technologies (divided into five historical periods), build factories, buildings in which you can repair your vehicles and provide tourists with attractions. Our competition, controlled by AI, is always on our heels – the fight for keeping our position on the market requires us to hire spies and saboteurs. Railway Empire offers a campaign mode and single missions, in which players must complete very specific goals. In addition to the aforementioned modes the players can also select a free mode that allows them to develop their virtual business without any goals imposed on them.

Bounty Train is an economic strategy developed by a small Canadian studio Corbie Games. The game takes place in USA during the second part of the 19th century. We play as a soon-to-be railroad magnate and our job is to accomplish the tasks we are given that focus on transporting cargo. We begin by piecing our train together and hiring employees: from train drivers controlling our engine to gunmen who will guard our precious cargo from robbers. Hiring the right people for the job is crucial because each and every one of them has different, more or less useful skills. As our business grows, we will invest the money we made in better train engines, more modern carriages, other equipment, and coal - our train's fuel. The game also features a nonlinear plot that focuses on finding the lost family and trying to save a group of native Americans from relocation.

An open-world economic tycoon game that focuses on managing a railroad company. The credit for developing this title goes to a Czech gamemaker - Jan Zeleny, who worked on the game for many years. Inspired by such classics as Transport Tycoon or Railroad Tycoon II, Mashinky gives us an opportunity to lay tracks, build and upgrade stations, work on new models of engines, and even to view the game world through the eyes of a train driver in charge of keeping the machine on the route set by the player. Apart from an FPP view and an aerial view, which is typical for strategies, Mashinky brings a special, schematic-isometric perspective that displays the map in the form of a legible engineering grid. This view mode is used to create new intersections of tracks and to mark spots for new structures. The game's economic system is definitely its distinctive feature, as it is not based on virtual money, but rather, on tokens inspired by board games. Those can be obtained through completing various assignments, and can be spent, for instance, on upgrading one's rolling stock - the electric tokens obtained through delivering fuel to a power plant allow the player to make progress towards electric trains. Because the game world is generated procedurally, each playthrough is a unique adventure.

Train Simulator 2017 is based on the same technology that powered the previous game. The biggest innovation are the four new routes: players can drive across Germany (between Lubeck and Hamburg), the United States (New York – New Jersey), France (Marseille Saint Charles to Avignon TGV), and the Great Britain (Bristol – Cardiff). Moreover, Train Simulator 2017 offers new locomotives, spearheaded by TGV Duplex, DB BR 218, and NJ TRANSIT ALP-45DP. Just as it was previously, the new game is fully compatible with Steam Workshop, therefore fans are free to create their own content and share it with the entire community. A post-apocalyptic adventure game featuring a classic 2D side-view and old-school pixel art visuals. The action of the game is set in a world in which the human kind is almost gone because of an outbreak of a virus that transforms people into strange and dangerous beasts. You assume the role of a survivor traveling from town to town to look for fuel and other important resources. Gameplay is divided into two separate aspects: the first one concerns keeping your train - the only means of transportation you have available - in good shape and taking care of its passengers. The other one involves exploration and fighting. Once in a while, you will stop at different places to thoroughly search them. Outside the train you can come across a variety of useful objects, or meet other survivors, but you will also stumble upon bloodthirsty creatures, which will need an immediate introduction to your broad arsenal of weapons.

In line with the tradition, the developers introduced a number changes and updates, including a rebuilt career system. The players can once again steer various railway engines – from steam engines through diesel ones and up to modern electric systems. This time, our progress in the game is illustrated by a number of gathered points, which are a currency for different medals and achievements. Additionally, the user interface received a complete overhaul – a more transparent HUD allows for better orientation in the current situation not only for skilled players, but also for complete amateurs. Train Simulator 2014 also introduces a number of new visual effects, as well as high-quality textures. The game is compatible with all previously released add-ons, while the owners of the previous editions receive a free upgrade to the 2014 version.

Train Sim World: CSX Heavy Haul follows in the same vein, yet is treated as a separate project based on new technology. Unfortunately, this means that the title is not compatible with numerous add-ons released for the Train Simulator series. As always, the gameplay involves controlling various railway engines and traversing numerous railways found all around the world. Moreover, the players can create their own tracks thanks to the included editor. The game contains both single and multiplayer modes. Interestingly enough, the game is powered by Unreal Engine 4, an engine used in titles such as Final Fantasy VII Remake, Days Gone, or Gears of War 4. As a result, the new incarnation of the railway series received multiple fixes, as well as improved graphics and physics.

There is also a career mode, in which we must complete dozens of varied missions. Quite obviously, we drive many different trains: from modern inventions to machines from the age of steam. The rich selection of tracks contains both real-life and fictional routes. Additionally, the editor returns in RailWorks 3: Train Simulator 2012, allowing for creation of custom routes – not only with various length and shape, but also through different types of terrain and with various surrounding objects. Finally, we can design trains and even whole scenarios, all of which can be shared with the game’s community.

Trainz Simulator: A New Era is another game from the popular simulator series, Trainz that, as its title suggests, opens a new era in the history of the series. The game was developed by N3V Games, a studio created by the series' original developers from Auran. A New Era uses a brand new engine. Thanks to that, gameplay is more realistic and the visuals are of the highest quality. Both the train models and the environment have more details to them, and thanks to the improved physics, visuals, and dynamic weather the game is even closer to reality. Introduction of the new game engine brought many changes, but the gameplay mechanics remain intact. We still design our own railways and test them. Traditionally, there is a set of pre-made routes available and many highly detailed railway engine models.
