Bannerlord in Bleak Colors; Here's Voor De Kroon

Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord has quite a few imitators. Dutch game Voor De Kroon relies on historical setting and a grayish color palette.

Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord took many years to finally come out of early access. Voor De Kroon, which recently hit Steam, is set to debut sooner.

It is fair to add that the developer of the game does not have as much ambition as TaleWorlds. Yes, the creator, because Voor De Kroon is the work of one person. Therefore battles will involve "only" up to 600 units at a time (in theory, this limit can be increased to 1,200, but it's better not to try this without a really powerful PC).

The title takes players back to the time of the Frisian-Dutch wars of the 13th century. The gameplay formula vividly resembles what fans of the Mount & Blade series have known for years. The player manages his settlements, and commands large armies in battles, but also fights personally on foot or from horseback.

The game also enables you to take direct control of a selected unit. In this case, the game switches from TPP to FPP view. The game is powered by Unreal Engine technology and offeres grim and "dirty" visuals.

So far Voor De Kroon has not received much publicity. The few Steam users who have checked out the game seem satisfied, although they have some comments. The developers deliberately presented the game world in gray colors, but admitted that they might have overdone it a bit and in the future Voor De Kroon will acquire some color.

There were also first updates with fixes and minor innovations (including a hardcore mode with permadeath mechanics). Nonetheless, the game definitely needs further polishing, as it's now all too apparent that it's an Early Access title from Steam. Also by the system requirements - the game could use some optimization improvements.

The developer does not expect to add a multiplayer mode, at least for now. Voor De Kroon is expected to come out of Early Access in about a year.
