Borderlands inspired chaotic co-op FPS, Mycopunk, has a demo on Steam
Devolver Digital announced a new co-op FPS inspired by Borderlands called Mycopunk. It has a free Steam demo now, so you and your friends can try it out.

Today, Devolver Digital released the announcement trailer and demo for Mycopunk, the debut game from developer Pigeons at Play. This mission-based co-op shooter draws inspiration from games like Borderlands, Risk of Rain 2, Helldivers 2, and more. It’s colorful, chaotic, and full of ways for your friends to keep themselves occupied while you step away for a second to grab a cup of water. You and those friends can give Mycopunk a try now through the demo, but the Steam page also gives a release date of 2025, so it might not be much longer to try out the full game.
Mycopunk, a chaotic co-op FPS with customizable weapons, has a free demo
The name Mycopunk comes from the combination of fungal lifeforms and science-fiction tech. When you arrive on a planet, it’s slowly overrun with fungal aliens that have sprouted up from the ground and strung together pieces of metal and technology to give themselves armor, weapons, and move about the world. You’ll have to shoot strategically to reveal weak points or cut off arms and legs to slow them down and disarm them.
Mycopunk has several different characters that each have different abilities, one with a jetpack and another with a glider. But no matter who you are there are plenty of options for movement, from rail grinding to driving a car around and running over enemies. The creativity in navigating the world is exactly the kind of distraction friends need when they need to be patient for a few moments before the mission starts.
Much like the famously incalculable weapon combinations in the Borderlands series, there are tons of different customizations players can add to their weapons. Morgan Park at PC Gamer wrote about their preview experience, and several of the weapon customizations they came across. One upgrade turns a discarded magazine into a throwable explosive that deals more damage the less ammo left in the mag. Another grants infinite ammo, but sustained fire deals damage to the player over time. These concepts are so much more intricate and engaging than something as simple as “does fire damage” or “increases ammo.” Which can be all too common in other games.
I was watching the stream on the Steam page for Mycopunk and happened to catch it at the right time. The four-player team had just completed an objective which fired a massive laser into the sky to cause a distant explosion. Everything seemed great as they watched the giant fireworks on the horizon. But after a few moments, the explosion grew larger and closer, until meteors of flaming wreckage rained down onto the whole world, crashing around them as they desperately called in a drop ship to get them out of there.
Mycopunk looks like a great co-op game, and I can’t wait to try it out. It does not shy away from the humor that comes from friends playing a chaotic game together, if anything it embraces it and encourages it. You can wishlist Mycopunk on Steam now.
