Darkest Dungeon 2 Already a Success Even Without Steam
Darkest Dungeon 2's launch turned out to be a big success. More than 100 thousand copies of the game were sold within 48 hours after the release of the early version.
- Within less than two days of its release Darkest Dungeon II sold over 100,000 copies;
- The game is available in Early Access on Epic Games Store and is expected to spend about 12 months in early access.
The team at Red Hook Studios has reasons to be happy. The studio boasted, that sales of Darkest Dungeon II have already exceeded 100,000 copies.
This impressive result was achieved in less than two days. The game debuted in Early Access on October 26 and you can buy it exclusively on Epic Games Store. Most likely, however, this is only a temporary exclusivity and with time the project will also apppear on Steam.
In Early Access, the game offers only one of five planned acts, each of which will end in a clash with a different boss. The creators assume that the Early Access phase will last about 12 months, although they do not rule out that the work will last longer, if necessary.
As you may remember, the game differs from the first part in terms of structure. While the original offered a campaign for tens of hours, Darkest Dungeon 2 focuses on short, about 5-hour expeditions to the inside of a mountain. The sequel is designed in a roguelike style, so that we can play through the game multiple times, each time experiencing fresh challenges.
The developers also shared a handful of stats. In the first 16 hours after launch, players made 71,019 assaults on the mountain. Of those attempts, only 3403 were successful.
In an interview published on Epic Games Store, the devs also explained why they decided to make such changes in the continuation. They had been creating the first part and its add-ons for many years. Developing a sequel made financial sense, but the creators didn't have the heart to design a game similar to the original. Darkest Dungeon 2 only became an exciting project when the decision was made to move away from what the previous game offered. This includes not only the roguelike nature, but also the fact that the design is much less nihilistic. The grim atmosphere has been retained, but this time the heroes have a chance at a definitive victory over evil.
