GeForce NOW With FPS Cap; Game Optimization is the Reason

Some GeForce NOW subscribers are clearly unhappy with how the service currently works. In one subscription plan, the company decided to cap the fps limit in games.

IN A NUTSHELL:
  1. Priority subscribers to Nvidia GeForce NOW are encountering fps limitations in games. Some titles are displayed at less than 50 frames per second;
  2. This is due to the default settings that enable the players to enjoy gameplay without technical issues;
  3. The most expensive subscription variant doesn't seem to include such limitations.

Nvidia has decided to limit the number of fps in some games available through its GeForce NOW service. However, the implemented fps caps were not immediately made publicly available. The practice was discovered by Reddit user LizzieLovesDaGlizzy while playing Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy.

Apart from the aforementioned game, twelve other titles have limited fps (you can find them in the table below). Why has Nvidia decided on such a step? Well, it's a matter of so-called Optimal Playable Settings (OPS), which are the default optimal settings for games, which enable Geforce NOW subscribers to enjoy the game without technical problems. You can read more about the use of this solution here.

Dauntless

55 FPS

Immortals Fenyx Rising

48 FPS

Cyberpunk 2077

45 FPS

Assassin's Creed Odyssey

45 FPS

Jurassic World Evolution

50 FPS

Dyson Sphere Program

50 FPS

Valheim

50 FPS

Path of Exile

50 FPS

Outriders

55 FPS

Kenshi

50 FPS

Biomutant

50 FPS

Dying Light

50 FPS

The Priority pack, which LizzieLovesDaGlizzy owns, offers up to Full HD gameplay at 60 fps. While the drop to 55 fps in the case of Dauntless may be difficult to notice, 45 frames in Cyberpunk 2077 or Assassin's Creed Odyssey may sting the eyes of many. Nvidia didn't particularly want to brag about the actual game performance in the subscription, focusing on maximum performance in a given plan and ignoring the limitations of popular titles.

Also worth mentioning at this point is the recently introduced highest tier of GeForce NOW subscriptions, the RTX 3080. This variant allows for 1440p gameplay (even 4K on the Nvidia SHIELD platform) at 120 fps for up to eight hours, and doesn't seem to use practices like OPS.

Currently, GeForce Now offers users three plans: Free, Priority and RTX 3080. The cloud-gaming library of the service includes more than a thousand games, which are available to players in every subscription offer.
