While the live chat may usually suggest otherwise, few people expected Hollow Knight: Silksong to appear during the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, but here we are.

Nintendo’s Switch 2 Direct was full of surprises, but perhaps one of the biggest surprises was the inclusion, however brief, of Hollow Knight: Silksong. If you have been paying attention to the video game world at all in the last several years, you’ve probably heard mention of one of the most anticipated indie titles of all time. The sequel to the fantastic action metroidvania Hollow Knight, was announced in 2018, but has seen very little new information ever since. At this point, it has become a meme.
For the last few years, every video game showcase live stream has had the inevitable Silksong hopes and dreams shouted into the void via live chat. The fandom has reached a point where even the slightest change, such as a developer changing their profile picture on social media, sparked several theories about future updates. It has started to become the norm to stop expecting Silksong to appear in any showcase. It had reached a point of significance and hype that many believed that, despite its indie status, it did not need the support of a showcase. Hollow Knight: Silksong is basically the indie Grand Theft Auto 6. They could drop a trailer tomorrow and it would probably overshadow the Nintendo Switch 2 news.
Silksong was once expected to be released in 2023 but was delayed. At the time, fans were surprisingly patient. Now that it’s three months into 2025, fans might not feel quite the same way. This “sophomore slowdown” is an interesting trend in successful indie game makers. Late last year, Earthblade, the follow up to breakout indie hit Celeste, was cancelled after years of troubled development. While the follow-up to Stardew Valley is far from cancelled, I wouldn’t expect to see it any time in the next few years. Some of these indie developers have spoken about the weight of success. How living up to their previous success not only puts immense pressure on them, in some cases it provides them with such financial security and stability that there is no point in rushing out the next title.
In yesterday’s Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, Hollow Knight: Silksong appeared during the third-party sizzle real, a section of the presentation where short clips of various games are shown with little introduction or fanfare. This was surprising not just for the fact that it actually happened, but also the fact that such a huge game was only shown for about five seconds. It doesn’t even look like we got any new gameplay either.
But the major takeaway from Silksong’s inclusion is that they included a 2025 release window. After years of waiting, this could finally be the year. As a developer recently responded on social media to a pleading fan: Hollow Knight: Silksong is real, progressing, and will release. And it will be on the Switch 2. For now, we’ll have to wait to see if we hear anything more.
