We have seen countless productions featuring sorcerers. However, in most cases, the gameplay mechanism for conjuring magic is very simplistic, to say the least, and boils down to pressing one button. That doesn't reflect wisdom and work that wizards had to put into studying and perfecting their art. Fortunately, there are a couple of titles that give more thought about casting spells. We have seen attempts of picturing this effort in Harry Potter games (including Hogwarts Legacy), where we had to draw shapes in order to learn magic. Then, there is Magicka, which relies on combining elements to create deadly effects (sometimes for the players themselves). Now, another contender has entered the scene – Mage Arena. In this production, magic is cast by literally (pun intended) saying the spells to your microphone. As it happens with such experiments, it is currently only available on PC, though many fans wonder what about consoles like Xbox, PS5 or even PS4. Let’s try to make sense of it.
Console release (Xbox, PS5, PS4) of Mage Arena explained
While many big corporations pour everything into graphics, audio and plot, they often forget about the fun that games can bring by introducing original, and sometimes challenging, interactions. Mage Arena takes a simple idea of wizards’ battles and wraps it in intriguing mechanics of spelling out the incantations and combines it with social aspect of co-op and PvP. This design quickly caught fire on Steam, drawing in thousands of players. However, console fans are left out, as the title is nowhere to be seen on Xbox, PS5 or PS4. Is it going to change?
As of now, the developer does not mention anything about plans for porting the game to other devices. It is hard to be surprised by this, as the production has only recently entered the Early Access program. Everything shows that jrsjams is the only person responsible for Mage Arena, which can make the creation of console versions even bigger challenge and prolong the process.
Of course, asking the creator to prioritize Xbox and PlayStation ports is an option, especially that we are encouraged to share feedback via game’s official Discord server, though despite that it can still take a lot of time. As has been announced on the Steam Store page of Mage Arena, the product’s price has been lowered to $3 from the regular $5 (which is still a steal), due to numerous bugs that the production struggles with. This shows that the biggest priority will be to make the game more stable before thinking about further feature developments.
Interestingly enough, even though Mage Arena needs more work and polish, it is amazingly successful considering that it’s an indie title. The first reviews are “Overwhelmingly Positive,” and it lets us believe that the developer is going in the right direction. More support will be definitely welcome and can expedite the creation process.
