BF6 uses a new anti-cheat that is incompatible with Linux, meaning it won't work on Steam Deck. But there may be hope for other handheld devices.
Today marks the first day of the Battlefield 6 open beta weekend, at least for those who were able to obtain early access. This is the first EA game to launch with Javelin, a new anti-cheat software that requires your computer to have Secure Boot enabled and has kernel-level access to your computer’s operating system and files. If you need help checking if your computer is ready for the weekend, we have a guide for you. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to play BF6 on Steam Deck.
Thanks to Javelin, EA’s anti-cheat, BF6 will not run on Steam Deck. Valve’s handheld device uses Linux, which is unfortunately incompatible with this new anti-cheat software. The executive vice president of EA, Vince Zampella, confirmed this in an interview with PCGamesN, saying: “It does not work on Steam Deck…” but added, “I think there are some non-Steam-Deck handheld platforms that it will work on, probably, right? But I don’t think, you know, it’s probably not the best way to play the game.” Even Zampella isn’t sure about all handheld devices, so is there hope for Battlefield 6 on a handheld?
If you’re hoping for BF6 on Nintendo’s new console, you are out of luck, at least for now. Zampella told PCGamesN, “We’re not doing Switch yet. Well, I’m not saying we are. I’m just saying we’re not considering it right now.” But there are plenty of other handheld devices geared much more toward a PC experience on the market these days.
The problem with the Steam Deck is its use of Linux. So, any other handhelds that use Linux will encounter the same issue. There is hope for a few of the more well-known handheld PCs, like the Lenovo Legion Go and the ASUS ROG Ally, which both use Windows rather than Linux. A few videos have been shared on YouTube of people who seem to be finding success playing Battlefield 6 on their handhelds. But, as this is still a beta test, we will have to wait to see if this is something that will work for everyone.
