Overwatch Remains Strong; Hearthstone Gains Popularity

Activision Blizzard's report states that 10 million people still play Overwatch every month. Moreover, the popularity of the card game Hearthstone is growing.

According to many, Overwatch's best years are over. In truth, however, the game is still a powerhouse. Activision Blizzard boasts that 10 million people play the game every month. This information was included in the publisher's latest financial statements. This result is impressive, especially considering that almost five years have passed since its launch. The game was released in May 2016 on PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4, while last year we saw a version for Nintendo Switch.

In the period from July 1 to September 30, 2020, the company generated 1.77 billion dollars in revenue, thus exceeding the forecasts of analysts, who expected 1.67 billion. Blizzard's games were responsible for 411 million dollars of this amount. The monthly number of Hearthstone users was said to have increased compared to the corresponding three months in 2019. However, it remained the same for World of Warcraft.

In the past billing quarter, King's casual and mobile games generated $536 million in revenue, while Blizzard's titles generated $411 million. Games from Activision's other departments, on the other hand, constituted the largest part of the financial cake, generating as much as 773 million dollars, mainly due to the great popularity of Call of Duty: Warzone and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

Let's recall that Overwatch 2 is already in development, currently announced for PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch, although we would be surprised if the project didn't also make it to Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5.
