A rumor about a PlayStation State of Play presentation happening next week has surfaced. Gaming insider ‘NatetheHate’ who you might remember from confirming the reveal timing of the Nintendo Switch 2, hinted about the next PlayStation presentation on social media. A January or February State of Play is a regular occurrence for the Japanese video game company, but nothing official has been announced yet. PlayStation’s first-party studios do have a handful of games expected to launch sometime this year, but so does Xbox, so this could be the time to share some more information.
This could be the first time a PlayStation presentation discusses Xbox Studios games. The recent news that Forza Horizon 5, a long-running Xbox exclusive series, will be making its way to the PlayStation 5, could mean there is more on the way. Perhaps even a Forza Horizon 5 trailer will be shown during this State of Play. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, developed by Xbox-owned studio MachineGames, announced last year that the game would launch on PlayStation sometime in early 2025. This could be the time to announce a more finite release date.
PlayStation has a few big games expected to be released sometime in 2025. This includes Sucker Punch’s follow up to Ghost of Tsushima, Ghost of Yotei, which was announced at a State of Play last September. The sequel does not have a release date yet, so this could be the opportunity for a new announcement. At last February’s State of Play, Hideo Kojima revealed the full name of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, along with a nearly ten-minute-long trailer. The highly anticipated sequel is also expected to launch sometime in 2025 but has yet to announce a specific release date.
In terms of live-service games, 2024 was a year of highs and lows for PlayStation. Helldivers 2 started off the year strong, becoming PlayStation’s fastest-selling game of all time. Then later in 2024, PlayStation dealt with the infamous announcement and launch of Concord, which no longer exists, and reportedly cost Sony a fortune. There are still several live-service games expected to come from PlayStation’s first-party studios. Bungie’s Marathon could be next, and there’s also Fairgame$ from Haven Studios. Either of those games could be featured in this State of Play. Hopefully Sony and PlayStation have learned their lessons from Concord.
Several other games could also receive a release date or be announced during this rumored State of Play, including Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, which has yet to reveal a release date, the potentially open-world Resident Evil 9, or maybe there’s a small chance we hear more from Naughty Dog about Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. But don’t hold your breath for that last one. For now, we will have to wait to see about the truth of this rumor, and if so, what PlayStation announes.
