Windows 10 Update Causes Problems With Printing

Windows 10 update from June 9 may cause problems on some computers, which mainly take the form of issues with printing.

After installing the latest patch, our printer may refuse to cooperate
IN A NUTSHELL:
  • New Windows 10 update causes problems with printing on some computers;
  • Microsoft is working on fixing the bug, but all that users can to now is to uninstall the update.

This month's patch KB4557957 for Windows 10, in addition to many improvements, unfortunately contains a rather serious error. On some computers it may cause inability to print. Microsoft recommends uninstalling the patch in this case, as no other way to restore printer functionality is currently known.

The error occurs in the following updates to Windows 10 (source: Softpedia):

  • KB4557957 (June 9, system version 19041.329)
  • KB4560960 (June 9, system version 18362.900 and 18363.900)
  • KB4561608 (June 9, system version 17763.1282)

Technically, this is the result of a malfunctioning print buffer (spooler). Any attempt to transfer anything to the paper on a PC affected by the issues ends up with an error or simply no printout. This happens even if we print to PDF. See Microsoft's website for more information about the update.

This is not the first problem concerning Windows 10 updates. We have already written about the bugs in update KB4512941. Also this year we had some not fully worked out updates. The causes of the problems with them are explained in this message.
