I recommend that you first climb up the stairs, because there are several "optional" rooms and corridors there. You can find there an Ashtray - 3G, a Microscope - 30G, a Candlestick - 6G, a Gear - 6G, a Magnifying Glass - 15G and a Coin Purse - 11G. Only after that, go back down, use some dimly-lit area and avoid the guard. It is worth robbing that person, thanks to which you will obtain a Coin Purse. After you get downstairs, explore the area under the stairs and collect the Flask - 4G. You can walk into the first big area, in the foundry, in two different ways - by opening the door at the ground level, or by walking in through the window at the higher level and stopping on the wooden beam. In both cases, you will end up in a new location [Old Foundry - Main Line Hall] and, to start with, it is worthwhile to listen to the conversation between two guards that you can see in the distance.
