Alan Wake 2: Game length Alan Wake 2 guide, walkthrough

Alan Wake 2 is a game that is definitely longer than the first part. This page of the guide explains how long it takes to go through the game and complete all the chapters, as well as how the gameplay time is affected by the platinum, optional puzzles and finds.

Last update: 14 November 2023

Before you consider Alan Wake 2 as your next title, you may want to know how long the game lasts. On this page, you can find everything that you need to know on this subject - how long completing the story of AW2 takes, and how undertaking optional puzzles and finding every collectible can extend this time.

Main story and reaching the ending

1 - Alan Wake 2: Game length - Appendix - Alan Wake 2 Guide
  1. The first installment of Alan Wake took about 10-11 hours to complete. The sequel is a much more lasting and complex game. Completing the main story alone will take you about 16-20 hours. This means completing all chapters of Return and Initation stories, where you play as Saga Anderson and Alan Wake respectively.
  2. More content in form of additional objectives and chapters to complete translates into more playtime. All Investigations (Saga) and scene modifications (Alan) may require extra time to properly complete without using a guide.
  3. Currently, Alan Wake 2 requires only one playthrough to see all that there is. There is no NG+ mode, and the player isn't motivated to begin another playthrough because of the lack of important choices and that there is only one ending to the game.

Secrets, puzzles and 100% game completion

2 - Alan Wake 2: Game length - Appendix - Alan Wake 2 Guide
  1. Alan Wake 2 features semi-open regions that can be explored in breaks from following the plot. These include Cauldron Lake, the town of Bright Falls with adjacent forests, streets of New York in Dark Place and metro tunnels.
  2. Moreover, there are over 100 collectibles to find in the game, and some of them have an influence on the gameplay, allowing e.g. additional weapon upgrades or passive bonuses to statistics. This is a good motivation to keep track of your collectibles and finding them.
  3. During Saga's chapters, you can devote extra time to complete various puzzles appearing in her story, and the main categories of these are Nursery Rhymes and Cult Stashes. Undertaking a full playthrough with achieving 100% completion of the game may extend playtime to over 30 hours.
  4. Trophy hunters should be happy with the fact that platinum trophy is achievable during a single playthrough of the game, without having to complete campaign parts on higher difficulty levels. However, you should track your progress and save often, as some achievements can be missed and the game may not allow the option to return to the locations connected to them.
