A Japanese development studio based in Fukuoka, with a branch in Tokyo. CyberConnect2 is primarily known for the .hack// and the Naruto: Ultimate Ninja series.

History

The studio began in February 1996 as CyberConnect. From the beginning, the Fukuoka-based team focused on creating titles for PlayStation. In 2001, the decision was made to change its name to CyberConnect2, and a year later, the studio embarked on a path it would follow for years to come.

.hack// and Naruto...

The studio's RPG, .hack//Infection, was released in 2002 on PlayStation 2. The game was so successful that it launched a series that the studio would develop in the following years. In 2003, the team expanded its portfolio with Naruto: Ultimate Ninja, a game based on the popular manga, which launched the next series in CyberConnect2's portfolio.

...and various side projects.

The team developed them alternately, and made their first major side project in 2012, when the action game Asura's Wrath, developed in collaboration with Capcom, was released on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. In 2013, the studio delivered a manga fighting game called JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: All Star Battle; after a few years, the latter title got a remaster.

Interestingly, in 2015, an announcement was made that CyberConnect2 had been entrusted with developing a remake of Final Fantasy VII. Two years later, however, the studio admitted that its collaboration with Square Enix was not particularly successful, so it decided to abandon the project.

Between 2020 and 2021, the studio released three games. Two of them, an action RPG Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot and an action game Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Hinokami Chronicles, were based on well-known manga licenses. The studio also developed its own tactical RPG, Fuga: Melodies of Steel, which later got a sequel.

Expansion

In 2010, CyberConnect2 opened its second studio in Tokyo, and in 2016 it opened its third branch in Montreal. However, the latter was closed in July 2023.
