Days Gone: How to beat horde at the old sawmill? Days Gone guide, walkthrough
Last update: 12 December 2022
On this page of our guide to Days Gone we have provided a combat description against the Old Sawmill Horde. Defeating the Horde is part of the story mission - I'll Save Some for You. From our walkthrough you will learn how to prepare for the fight against the Horde and how to get rid of all the Freakers that are part of it.
This is the last and third Horde, which must be defeated to complete the main plot of Days Gone (in addition, in the game world there are dozens of additional hordes). The fight with Old Sawmill Horde is happening after you unlock I'll Save Some for You mission. The sawmill is located East of the Iron Mike's Camp in the Lost Lake region.
Battle with the Old Sawmill Horde will be quite long, as you have to defeat a large group of monsters. Before you go to the sawmill, we advise you to prepare for battle - take a machine gun or a good gun, cure the hero and provide him with additional bandages, take as many bombs, traps and Molotov cocktails as you can, as well as equip Deacon's motorcycle with saddle bags. This last point is particularly important. Thanks to the bags attached to the motorcycle, you will be able to retreat to it and easily restore your ammo.
Depending on the time of day, the Horde may be inside the main building of the sawmill or near it in the open air. In both cases, don't get noticed by the Freakers, because you have to start fighting, being unprepared.
Try to place as many traps as possible in the area. It is desirable that it was a close encounter proximity trap. Manual detonation of bombs can be difficult when you need to focus on planning your escape route at the same time. Do not forget to park the motorcycle at a distance of about 100-150 meters from the sawmill, in case of a fast retreat.
Like all other battles with the Hordes, it's best to start this fight by throwing Molotovs with napalm. Use at least two bottles with Napalm and throw them into the largest clusters of Freakers to set fire to as many monsters as possible.
Once the Horde will notice Deacon and begin the chase, run to the places where you have placed traps, so the monsters are going to fall in them. It is also worth getting to explosive items from the environment, although there are not as many of them as in the fight with the Iron Butte Horde.
During your battles you can run between buildings or run into the sawmill and reach the top floor to get to the roof. Regardless of the chosen escape route, remember that the Horde is very large. Even if the visible monsters ran after Deacon, for example, for some sawmill building, the other part of the Horde could have flanked him away from the other side. Be cautious and react quickly to dangerous situations that can lead for being overrun and surrounded by the Freakers.
It is unlikely that you will be able to kill all the monsters from the Horde in a single attack. However, you can move a bit away from the sawmill, preferably about 150-200 meters. This action has two main advantages:
- More dilution of monsters. Having at the certain moment "only" 10-15 monsters in vicinity, you can safely use firearms.
- Freakers will eventually lose interest and return to the sawmill. You can use your free minute to get back on the bike and restock. Also, the game allows you to attack the Freakers when they are traveling to their lair.
Don't go too far from the sawmill (for example, in order to return to the Iron Mike's camp), because the Horde may get a part of its strength. This is because new Freakers may get to the Sawmill from the area.
