How to unlock access to the Iron Butte?

Iron Butte doesn't get unlocked at the same time like Lost Lake. You have to further progress along the main storyline. What is interesting, the main character will visit Iron Butte two times, but any of these expeditions does not allow you to stay there for longer, and quietly explore the area.
The main journey to the Iron Butte is the one from the mission called Now That's An Idea. In this task, Deacon and Boozer cross a previously inaccessible tunnel connecting the regions of the Lost Lake and Iron Butte. You have to go through the above-mentioned story mission and a few more, and finally blow up the dam to deal with Carlos. After completing all the tasks related to the trip to the Iron Butte, this region will be fully accessible. Information on important locations in The Iron Butte
During your stay in the Iron Butte you may check:
- 1 NERO Checkpoint
- 1 NERO Research Site
- 2 Ambush Camp
Below are the details of the main locations from the Iron Butte region.
Cloverdale Facility

Cloverdale Facility is located in the southern part of the map, and it is the largest unique location in the region of Iron Butte. For the record, it's a carefully guarded research facility where Sarah worked before the outbreak. Upon arrival in the vicinity of the facility it turns out that it is tightly closed and surrounded by a fence under voltage. The game will initially allow you only to look into the watchtower, located at the main gate.
Cloverdale Facility will not remain a closed building until the very end of the game. Deacon will be able to explore it in the future, during the main storyline, after taking the journey to Crater Lake. You may explore the facility after completing the main story mission called What Kept Me Going. The task lets you to pass through the entire protected area, as well as access to the main building where the research was conducted.
Dam

You will be able to visit the dam during the above-mentioned most important expedition, in which Deacon and Boozer plan to blow it up. Here we are talking specifically about the mission called This Never Gets Old.
The destruction of the dam will lead to partial flooding of the main Rippers camp adjacent to it. This will allow the heroes to enter this area and get to Carlos's place of residence.
NERO Research Site

There is only one NERO Research Site in Iron Butte - it is adjacent to the camp at Redwood. Mobile base NERO is near the wreckage of the helicopter behind a small precipice. To remind you, this problem can be solved by installing nitro on a motorcycle and simply using acceleration to safely jump over to the other side.
Ambush Camp on Wagon Road

Ambush Camp on Wagon Road is in the northeast corner of the Iron Butte. It is one of the two camps in the region, but only by securing the Wagon Road one you may get new crafting plans. After defeating the bandits traditionally you need to find a descent into the bunker. In it you will find a plan that allows you to produce a very useful Attractor Bomb.
