Instead of another Borderlands, we got a little change in the form of Tiny Tina's Wonderlands. The spin-off of the famous series by Gearbox Software has the same recognizable graphics and similarly crazy action, but in a slightly different universe, taking us into more of a fantasy world. The title Tiny Tina is a teenager with an explosive temperament and at the same time a master of the RPG session game in which we are taking part. The created (as befits an RPG) hero named Fatemaker is to save the land from a cruel necromancer – Dragon Lord – at the same time surviving the humor and absurd ideas of the game master, which we get to feel the hard way.

A little turn towards fantasy was actually an absolutely brilliant move. The combination of dragons, sword and magic with traditional shooting turned out great, maybe apart from not-so-perfect hand-to-hand combat mechanics. Tiny Tina's Wonderlands delights players with atmosphere, first-class humor with numerous references to iconic movies and games, and an original, unique world. Shooting is a lot of fun all the time, though there is still room for tweaking the rewards and loot. Small shortcomings disappear in the face of great dialogues and equally good voice acting and the overall joyful vibe of the game. This is one of the best action games of the year.

On paper, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands seems like it would be a great escape from the usual looter shooter game fans have come to know over the years. As a Borderlands game, it delivers one of the best RPG experiences to date with plenty of customization options and loot to discover. Its pacing, design choices, and repetitive structure, however, hold it back from being so much more than just a fantasy spin-off.
